Poor Fi :(

I think I posted here before about how one of Fi bffs had to step down from being a GM in our wedding. His band is in the process of being picked up by a record label and must play south by southwest in Texas, which conveniently falls on our wedding date. We completely understand and wish him nothing but the best.

Now, another one of Fi GM might have to step down. He's gotten a bit depressed about his recent breakup with his daughter's mother, and the mother dating another man. Also with financial reasons, as he is a single father living alone in the LA area and while he takes home okay money, in the end he is a server. He's just not that excited about the wedding and spending for it, and we totally get that. We had okay'd everything about 9 moths ago and things were great then, but of course everything's changed and the mother and daughter aren't coming on the trip.

I'm hoping to come up with some more ideas to pass along Fi to give to GM to help him with the costs. The wedding is on a Saturday night in Miami, and he would be traveling across the country from LA. I have already given the idea that the GM can wear a suit he already owns (we know he has one that is nice and appropriate for the level of formality), can take the red eye on Friday night to get in on Saturday morning, he can crash on a bed (this is where I have no clue where) till the afternoon then get ready with the boys for the wedding. If he leaves early Monday morning, the flight is only $276 (plus $20 each way for the checked bag) but is still pretty good for one way across the country. Fi and I are leaving at the same time from the same airport so we can carpool.

The GM is then just left with a plane ticket around $300, and having to find a ride and place to stay for 2 nights. This GM is the reason why Fi and I met, and is one of Fi very best friends. I would feel horrible if he can't make it; anyone else have any other ideas on saving money for this GM?

Is it completely out of the question for you to cover the flight cost?

I feel that if you want him there that much and his issue is the cost of trip, maybe you can cover it for him?

ETA. your own personal budget permitting, of course.

We do have extra funds (as outlined by my previous post) and decided to give the BMs some extra funding towards their dress alterations.

I'd have to see if we could cover the airfare, not entirely sure we could. Maybe just a portion of it? (Is that offensive?)

  • I think airfare is all or nothing.  But if you can't afford the full airfare, maybe you can provide a hotel the night of the wedding?

Have you told the BMs this? If not, I'd change your decision. Flying this guy out to your wedding sounds more worthwhile.

I think covering a portion has the potential to sound more offensive - if you say, "Hey, we're looking to buy you a gift, do these times work?" you can sound more like a gracious host, whereas I don't think there's a good way to say, "Hey, if you need, we can cover part of your flight."

I have :( They are going through my seamstress and she is tacking it to my final bill. They already made dates for the alterations.
