Criminals in the family

I have a brother that is married to a criminal.  She is unsafe to be around and I feel that having her there would only incite her tendency toward drama and pot-stirring and plotting.  Can I invite him without her?  He IS my brother, after all, and knows how I feel about her.

  • How is she unsafe to be around?
    I am also wondering this.

Generally, no you can't invite your brother and not invite his wife. Talk about stirring the pot.....

But there are exceptions, so please elaborate on the bolded.

  • Depends. What crimes has she committed?

I want to know this too.  Did she get busted for underage drinking, or are we talking several armed robberies?
  • To me it depends on the the offense and the circumstances.

For example, my DH's cousin is married to a crackhead who just got out of jail for the 4th time.  She has been convicted of stealing, forging prescriptions and armed robbery.    She is not invited to any family functions since MIL and a few others were victims of her stealing.

My DH plead guilty of misdemeanor assault   25 years ago. Young, stupid, got into a fight with someone.   He is welcome everywhere.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We need more information. What did she do? How is she unsafe to be around?

Ditto that more info is needed.  Martha Stewart spent time in a white collar prison but I think she's sill requested to attend multiple cocktail parties.

However if your uncle was Heisenberg, I'm guessing he would be crossed off the list.
Why?  Not a fan of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle or quantum mechanics in general?
Everyone looks for an excuse not to invite the family member or SO who'll be talking everyone's ear off about quantum mechanics all evening.

  • And who are the other criminals, since you pluralized it? What'd they all do?

The cupcake one still bugs me. I was dying to know how that ended!

  • I invited a criminal to my wedding. She's my cousin. She has a serious drug problem, and is homeless as a result. She's been in and out of jail and rehab, mostly for drug-related offenses but definitely some assault and stuff, too. I didn't want to ruffle family feathers by NOT inviting her. Because I didn't actually have an address for her (and not sure if she even HAD an address), I just put her on her mother's invite. She's lived there on and off. Her mother RSVP'd that she'd be there. She ended up being a no show! I never got an apology or anything for the no show (from her mother, I wouldn't assume anything from her).

I did see her less than 2 months later at Christmas, and she was clearly on drugs. She got in some serious trouble a little after Christmas (seriously, there was a major headline in a major newspaper about it; totally drugs-and-homelessness-related), but nobody got hurt or anything.

I'm not the OP, but I figured I could alleviate a little interest by providing my own criminal wedding story!
  • I've got a couple of cousins who smoke pot, but no serious criminals.  If we did, they would have been sweating at our wedding - four officers in their dress uniforms, four of us not in uniform, and three who showed up a little later, while they were working.  We joked that it was the safest place to be that night.

    It's an outlaw wedding!

(if you are marrying a son, yes, you must invite all the other sons to the wedding)

    Bank heist ring?

    STIB
Illegal moonshine ring? That's what FI's relatives are "criminals" for and you bet your ass they're invited to my wedding.
These sound like really fun people to invite to a wedding. Surely it means they'll bring you some hooch as a wedding gift, right?
