petite bride..help!

I am going to begin the hunt for my dress soon..and i have NO idea where to start or what i even want...that being said, if anyone has suggestions for the best/most flattering shapes for a small bride (I am 5'3" and 104 lbs) I would much appreciate it. I would like to go into my appointments with some sort of idea on what shape/style i want but I am nervous because I don't want to be flooded or taken over by my gown! So I will greatly appreciate any recommendations on what might work best on a small figure! Thank you so much!

We are very similar in size. Several companies make "petite" options in a dress already. I found a dress that I loved and luckily it could be ordered in a regular or in a petite. The dress was already several inches shorter in length and not just from the skirt length, but also the torso length.
I had to keep an open mind about shapes of dresses...since I'd never tried on such elaborate gown before...I had to try on several styles before I found the styles that I thought (and my ladies thought) complimented my shape and size best. Pick out a few different dresses you like in different styles and try the on...you might be disappointed that one you really liked looked so good on the tall model and not on you...or happily surprised that something you didn't think was going to look good actually looked great. Just have fun with it.

  • I am 5'3" and 112 lbs. I went to davids bridal.. although they don't carry very many size 2 dresses, they can just clip you and order your size! Worked out for me! If you have any shape at all (I hardly do) a mermaid is flattering and shows off your teeny body! A ballroom dress would look nice, too! I suggest trying on a few of each style to find what you like the most!

Here's a photo of my dress!

Good luck and remember to have fun! You don't have to find your dress in one day.

  • Don't limit yourself to a specific shape of dress.  Try on everything you like or might like.

Just be smart about asking for honest appraisal of the alterations needed.  Plain hemming is simple (just remember you may be charged for every layer hemmed--so if there are four layers of tulle and each hem is $40, than that's a $160 hem).  Hemming a dress with an applique around the bottom is not.  It either has to be taken up at waist level, or the applique is removed, dress hemmed, and applique sewn back on.  Not all beading can be hemmed.  If it's less expensive or on one consecutive strand, much harder than individually placed or clusters of beads.  Have the alterations person weigh in on what's needed and at what cost.
  • I'm similar in size (5'1, 90 lbs). For me, the trumpet and mermaid silhouettes look the best but I was limited by budget and size (I'm smaller than a size 0 and not many dresses come in a size 0 to begin with where I went). Don't limit yourself! Try on a variety of different dresses and silhouettes and pick the one you like best!

  • I'm in the same boat (5', 105lbs) and straight up and down. I found that the drop waist was terrible, made my legs look about 2" long, other than that anything worked really so it will depend on the feel of your wedding. I liked the more sleek look on my body but it just wasn't the "fun" factor I wanted. Smaller ballgown style and A-line seemed to work nicely, just watch where the waist hits you, if it's too long it looks a little off! I'm not sure what other designers do this but Casablanca makes to fit so they take your measurements in store and order it to your body which might be a good option to look into. I think I'm going to stick with this line because of that, trying to alter something to fit could cost a lot.

  • Definitely agree with not limiting yourself to a preconceived dress shape. I'm a mere 5 feet tall (on a good day) however I'm curvy/hourglass. Small waist, big hips, bust.I was really concerned about looking short and stumpy. I went in with an open mind and ended up with a ballgown. which I never ever imagined I would since I thought it would swallow me whole. But it really accentuated my bust and small waist while covering my hips and butt, which im self conscious about. So definitely try them all on! Have fun!
