  • Anything with a corresponding dance. And Blurred Lines.

It's on my play over and over list along with Timber.  I'm so basic :(
Haha,  apparently I am too. We had Timber on our "must play".

It wasn't on our DNP list because it isn't catchy. It is. Great beat.

It was on our DNP list because it's rapey.
I hear you...I actually had a discussion with one of my friends once about how we felt like terrible feminists for liking that song so much

Here's what we submitted to our DJ (we're picky):
Celebration - Kool & The Gang
We Are Family - Sister Sledge
I've Got A Feeling - Black Eyed Peas
    Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke
Can't Hold Us - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
    Chicken Dance
    Electric Slide
    YMCA
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Shania Twain
    Def Leppard
    Hot in Herre - Nelly

And thank god Weird Al parodied Blurred Lines because I can finally jam out to the music without any guilt!

I don't remember what we had on ours. I know I added Kotton Eye Joe because I was horrified to see that it was on our DJs list of Top 100 requested songs. I also added We Are Family, Celebration, and Rhianna "What's My Name" because I hate that song, and my friends know it and play it just to mess with me. They once spent $4 at a bar jukebox to put it on loop several times just to annoy me.

Other than that, we actually made our entrance to the beginning of Blurred Lines (I love that song sorrynotsorry) and we definitely had one of the group dances (either Cupid Shuffle or Cha Cha Slide). We didn't request it, but the DJ played it and a bunch of people danced to it, so I guess it worked out okay.

    <<Awful flashbacks>>

This was the FAVORITE song of the women in my sorority...except me.  Hate this song.  One of those where it was played at least once at every party we threw and everyone would jump up extra excited and start dancing.

  • Oh my gosh I was thinking about this the other day, and asked my fiancé what songs he would want on our do-NOT-play list and he was like "I can't really think of any... but I know a lot of brides give that kind of list to the DJ"... then he laughed b/c this is apparently a "bride" thing and grooms don't have these lists. I beg to differ...but I digress. My list of things that in no way shape or form will be played at our wedding include:

    - Macarena (had a dream the DJ started playing this at our reception and I ran over and said "NO WAY")

    - Thinking Out Loud - I KNOW this will get me a lot of flack.... I just can't stand to listen to this song one more time. If I hadn't heard it so many times, I'd definitely want it played...maybe I'll feel different in a few months but as of now...sorry Ed.

    - any organized dances (Cha Cha Slide, YMCA...)

    -   Don't Stop Believin', Free Fallin, etc. I went to a wedding this past fall where I think the DJ just googled "party pleasing songs" and played them all with no rhyme or reason. He was ...not good.

    - Money Money

    - NO GANGNAM STYLE. nuh uh

    - Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy.

    - Pour Some Sugar on Me

    - Teach me how to Douggie

    - Mambo No. 5, Who let the dogs out...basically anything from my pre-teen dance days that 13-year old boys would jump around to

    - Hey Ya

    - Gold Digger

...the list goes on... Wow. Am I high maintenance? Don't answer that :)

  • I guess I am the same wagon as everyone else...ABSOLUTELY NO GROUP DANCES!!!
    - YMCA
    - Cha Cha Slide
    - Cupid Shuffle
    -The Humpty Dance
    -Teach Me How To Douggie
    - Macarena
    - Chicken Dance
    - Electric Slide

Here are some ABSOLUTELY DO NOT PLAY:
    - Anything by Beyonce and/or Jay Z -especially  "puta ring on it" - BARF!!!
    - Forget you (Cee Lo Green - So inappropriate on so many levels)
    - Baby Got Back (Sir Mix A Lot - Yes I have one and it will put you out if you play this)
    - Gangham Style (Psy - need I go there?)
    - Bad Romance (Lady Gaga - who wants bad karma at their wedding?)
    - ABC (Jackson 5)
    - Hey Ya! (Outkast)
    - 1999 (Prince come on now um it's 2015 already!)
    - Mambo #5 (Lou Vega)
    - Sexyback (J. Timberlake)
    - GoldDigger (Kanye)
    - Blurred Lines (Robin Thicke)

There is a reason for DNP lists...and for those weddings that I have been to that play this crap just remind me of how not to have a good time!

We actually had this song played by our contemporary string quartet and it sounded badass! But I agree, I definitely wouldn't have wanted the original version played.

Honestly all the Journey/Bon Jovi hate makes me sad for you people :p

Some of the best pictures from our reception were taken during the group-sing-along/circle-dance to "Livin' on a Prayer"!

  • The only song I was totally against was Gangam Style and anything Justin Bieber.  I also asked for no "I gotta Feeling" from the Black Eyed Peas... my bridesmaids however did not know this and organized a "flash mob" at my reception and guess what song they used...."I gotta feeling."  When it started at first I was like "UGH! I said no to this song!"...and then I realized what was going on and I forgave them (and the DJ).  Makes since why my dad kept talking me in to "allow" that song.

Haha ours were from "Don't Stop Believin." I totally love to jam out to those cheesy 80s songs - DH not so much. His friends requested it knowing this - they then dragged him out onto the dance floor and we have great pictures of him and I dancing to it while all our friends are jamming out around us. DH was a great sport with the whole thing, and those pictures make me smile every time I see them.

  • This is such a great thread. I was thinking about our DNP list the other day and I'm just now realizing how many I would have regretted leaving off of the DNP list, so I thank you!

So far, our DNP list includes:

-Any group dances/YMCA/Cha Cha Slide/Etc (my mom is specifically requesting the Electric Slide, and I said nope)
    -Justin Beiber
    -Taylor Swift
    -Rap/Hip Hop/Beyonce/Kanye
    -Country
    -Happy by Pharrell

This list may grow. There will be a lot of classic rock. I love me some Journey and Bon Jovi.

  • I had two rules: no "All of Me" (John legend) and no Black Eyed Peas.

Our DJ was great and really got a feel for our personalities, which is what I attribute the lack of group dances to, despite the fact that they were on his top 100 list of most requested songs.

The only song played that I didn't like was "All About That Bass".
  • Amazed by Lonestar. Sorrynotsorry I can't stand it. It has to be the most depressing "romantic" country song I've ever heard. I used to take bets with the bartender when I worked banquets how often it would be played.

  • If I hear brick house I will burn down the building.

Not sure if I posted yet or not.

  • We don't have too many for our DNP list yet. I will probably say nay to group dances except "The Electric Slide", which my parents love and I can just sit down and get a drink then.

Honestly, the only thing I am sure of being on the list is "Sweet Caroline" because it's almost my name and I'm sick of hearing people sing it at me.
  • I feel weird because I love half these songs for the sheer fact they're just ... Idk. I'm cheesy.

Only song on DNP list is "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.
    I don't want to sob.

There are a few songs on my DNP list mentally, but I have made a deal with my mother and M that I can leave the room. That would be lots of old country music.
    Can't exactly put on DNP cuz older guests love it, but DJ promised not to play unless requested. {not popular anyways, so i'm safe}
  • I feel weird because I love half these songs for the sheer fact they're just ... Idk. I'm cheesy.

You go ahead and OWN that cheese!  :-)   A line dance here, or a sing-along there ... if you can't own it sincerely, own it ironically!
  • Justin Bieber
  • I haven't actually started coming up with one just yet, all I know so far is that my sister is not allowed near the DJ! She will be almost 15 when I get married and her music taste is so..."inappropriate" (have you heard the whisper song!?) that she may literally give my older guests a heart attack. I'm confiscating  her iPod to go through it and find out what songs she has on there that I need to put on my DNP plus whatever else comes to mind. I love her to death but we do not share the same music taste at all.
  • "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." It was a huge deal in my sorority, which came to an untimely end while I was still in the house. To this day, every time I hear it, I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. I'd rather that not kill my buzz. Also: No line dancing of any kind.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers

"Sell crazy someplace else. We're all stocked up here."

  • LOL!   This list is giving me so much life!  Next on the to do list is to look for DJs and I'm really looking forward to it!  FI said "No!!!!!" to that Black Eyed Peas song "Tonight's gonna be a good night".  He said he would pull the plug out of the wall if the DJ even seems like he's thinking about it.  :)

Considering that all of his folks are from NJ, we have to have Bon Jovi and Bruce on the list.  And considering my side of folks, we have to have MJ, Kool and the Gang and the Commodores.  :)  We won't have any questionably-lyric-ed songs (i.e. blurred lines) or rap or hip hop (like current hip hop.... throwback stuff (ie Salt and Pepper; Sugarhill Gang) are possible).

And I have to admit--- I'm a sucker for group dances.  Like, Macarena, YMCA, the chicken dance, the wobble, etc will be put on the DNP list just in case, but I love the Cha Cha slide.  Why do people hate group dances so much, though?  I'm super curious!  :)

  • I'm surprised so many people have mentioned Mambo #5/Who Let the Dogs Out and stuff like that...

Would any DJ actually play that?!?! Do I really need to list every awful, weird, slightly offensive song that has ever come out???? (It Wasn't Me, the Thong Song, etc) I just assumed human decency would win out!!

Gotta admit, I do love me the Cupid Shuffle. All other group dances can go (although I do a mean Cotton Eye Joe), but I love the Cupid Shuffle.
  • Someone actually requested "Mambo #5" at my wedding...

Mambo #5 is on my must play!!! My family listened to it ALL THE TIME when I was little.

  • So far, we have "no group dances" and "no offensive language", but I am looking forward to making a full-on "DO NOT PLAY" list since I've already had people mention "The Chicken Dance". How did this become a tradition to play at weddings, anyway? Anyone know?

My family went to a wedding recently where a certain derogatory word was thrown around very liberally (they played mostly rap, including during dinner service). So not okay for a wedding.
