LOOKING FOR A SATIN RIBBON TO LACE UP CORSET WEDDING DRESS

PLEASE HELP! My wedding dress has a corset back, I want to replace the white corset tie with a color one.  I thought it would be as easy as buying a satin ribbon, but that is not what my current dress has.  It is a satin ribbon the has been folded over a stitched so it has a hollow inside.  Please see pic to see what I am talking about.  Does anyone know were I can get a light purple one about 1/2" wide?

I have looked and looked with no avail.

Hmm, I don't know where you'd buy one but it would be simple for a seamstress to do or for you to do if you know how to sew. You'd just fold the piece of ribbon in half, sew the length of it, and then turn it inside out.
  • Any Notions dept of a sewing store or online shop sells two sided fabric ribbon. Get twice the length you need plus a foot.
You want a width twice the finished width. If you fold one piece lengthwise in thirds, and cut off one third, then fold the other piece of ribbon in half, you stitch the now 1/3 inch folded piece inside the now 1/2 Inch folded piece, and having the piece inside gives it the thickness and durability of a lace.
I f you are having any alterations done for anything, just buy the ribbon. It is a quickie job for anyone with a narrow trim foot.

  • i also am using a different color ribbon for my corset, and i'm just using a double sided ribbon from a craft store. Mind you it isn't in every loop!  i was just seeing what it would look like.

  • Thanks guy, I will see if the place altering my dress can do that for me.  I think I will also try a double faced satin ribbon first to see if I like it.
  • Remember a FABRIC double faced satin ribbon if you can. The dyes are more stable. Some crafts ribbons not fabric bleed dyes onto a dress after a few hours. Lots of what is in crafts stores is Fabric, not all. I like pretty contrast ribbons in corsets.

I bought ribbon for several different uses for the wedding from here. It was great. 5 yards should be enough and it gives you choices of width for each color.

  • You might also look for satin bias tape, if you can find it. You could make it as well, if you are so inclined, but then you have the added expense of buying a yard or two of fabric and the time required to cut it on the bias, sew the ends together, and iron the folds into it.
