Photography on honeymoon?

Is anyone or has anyone hired a photographer for their honeymoon? I'm always the one taking photos and never in them. We will be on a cruise so I know they have tons of photographers taking your pics on the ship but what about in ports? Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Photography on honeymoon?

  • Whenever H and I go on vacations we either take selfies or ask others around us to snap a photo or two.  Hiring a photographer seems a little over the top, IMO.

  • Thanks @Maggie0829‌ I was thinking the same thing. A friend of mine has one of those selfie stick things not sure how good they are.

  • If you get a GoPro, it makes for good selfies since it shoots at a wide angle. On our honeymoon, we hardly had to ask anyone to take pictures of us, and we still got great shots of the two of us together.

Oh the selfie stick. I think they work pretty well if you can angle it so it doesn't show in the photo. But you (I think) look like a total putz using it. But hell, I'd probably use it on vacation. A bunch of people I'll never see again = I'm okay making an ass of myself.

My feelings exactly.  I know some people who hate to look like a tourist when they are on vacation.  My thinking is, well I am a tourist and I will probably never travel to this location again so why the hell not act like one?

  • Honestly, I would be embarrassed using a selfie stick. And I'd probably feel a little embarrassed having a photographer with me like paparazzi. I think it's fine to take some of just one of you at a time and then ask a few nice strangers/ other cruisers to take one of the couple. You don't both need to be in every shot.

I booked one excursion though where a local man picked you up at the dock and brought you hiking in the rain forest, then snorkeling at a private beach and he also took photos of you the whole day. He had the number one reviews on trip advisor for that island so he was definitely trustworthy and professional. I was SO excited for that, but unfortunately I was in an accident and had to cancel the cruise the day before departure. I was so bummed about the whole thing but he refunded my deposit no question.

I forgot about the GoPro. I need to look into that. Thanks for the info

  • You're welcome!
  • I may be entering tacky tourist town, but I bring a tripod on vacations with H & I.  It folds up pretty small, is lightweight and we carry it in a backpack.  It helps us to get photos of us together when no one else is around or when there isn't anything I can balance the camera on.  I was able to get tons of great photos of H & I while we were in Hawaii a few weeks ago.
  • I thought about getting the selfie stick, but then I read an article on the trend.  And there were a bunch of photos of people taking pictures of the selfie stick people, poking fun of them, and I didn't want to be one of them!  lol.  Perhaps someday.  For now, I have no shame in asking someone to take our picture, so we always have lots from our trips.

My niece got a selfit stick for Christmas (she's 17) and loves it and you do get good photos with it. But I would practice with it before your trip. Her first few were just ok, but now you can't even tell she is using the stick.

  • on the selfie stick thing I would also think you need to decide if you plan on bringing your smart phone with you on excursions or always having it with you on the ship.  I tend to not bring mine on vacation when we go out somewhere, like I don't leave my iphone in my bag on the beach or take it on an excursion bc I'm not comfortable with that.  I'd rather use our regular small camera or we also have a gopro for snorkeling excursions because I don't mnd if I lose those as much as I would my phone.
  • Thank you @kvruns‌ I'm the same way. I have my good camera for when not on the beach. I have a small pocket size for the beach.

  • The tripod isn't a bad idea! They have the bendable ones like the Gorillapod so if no one is around to take your picture, you can just attach it to something to get a photo and use the self timer mode.  We took photos after our engagement while hiking (not using a tripod) and they came out well- but they would have been better with a tripod.  Now I'm thinking I need to get one of those bendable tripods for myself...
  • we took a lot of selfies...but we also would pay attention to the other tourists in the area.  when we saw another english speaking couple that appeared to also be taking a selfie, we would approach them and offer to take their picture for them if they'd take one for us.  We actually got pretty good at taing selfies on the trip, and we have lots of pictures of just one of us taken by the other.  Also, on any excursions or group tours, we would have the guide or another person in the group take pictures for us.  it worked out pretty well.

I do have friends who hired a photographer to do a Trash the Dress shoot while on their honeymoon in Hawaii.  The pictures are pretty awesome.  but that was just a few hours of their time one day.  not the whole trip.  if i had piles of money though, i might consider just bringing a photographer on all of my vacations!

Thanks for the input!  I forgot about on the tours to have others take pics too.

  • We hired s photog for beach photos on the honeymoon. We booked it like a regular photo shoot. I would be shocked if they didn't offer this service on the cruise and if you started pay attention for it, I bet you'd see a lot of people using the service. GL!

The last cruise we went on (Royal Caribbean), you could book the ship photographers for a private portrait session around the ship or in some of the ports.  The photos were nicer than the usual wait in line for prom-like background ones you usually see from cruises.  The cost was equivalent to what you might pay for a family photo session in the US.  You can either buy prints from them or get the digital files to print yourself
  • @Newborndoc2008‌ I didn't know that. I'll check into it. Thanks
