Re: Random talk

  • Congrats @lolo883!!!

I hadn't heard about the accident. I don't understand what the hell that woman was thinking. I used to live at a house that had an uncontrolled railroad crossing go across my driveway. I was regularly late everywhere because I would see the train coming and wait. Most of the time I easily could have made it out of my driveway before the train got there, but it was not a risk I was willing to take.

Definitely over 50 Shades of Grey and wish it would go away. I wanted to see American Sniper, but FI is super against it and spent most of Monday engaged I a huge FB fight over the movie. So I would like to not stir up that BS again.

I'm finally adjusting to our switch to low carb and am no longer cranky and threatening to kill someone for a grilled cheese. I'm already down 9 pounds! I will give myself a few cheat days this weekend since it's my bday and I want cake.

I heard a little bit about the crashes on the radio this morning; awful.

I thought BC was really good in American Sniper, because he just pulled off that PTSD awkward stare really well. And I totally cried at the end.

This is cracking me up today: http://imgur.com/gallery/H0ZPI

We got more snow last night. It's hard to tell with all the drifting, but we have at least a foot and a half. At least H had some fun JUMPING OFF THE ROOF into a snow pile after sweeping it all off the roof. But now the roads are all schloppy and gross.

And what the heck, I'm gonna go ahead and sneak this random tidbit in here too for good measure. :)

@lolo883 You sneaky thing! I almost missed it!

    CONGRATS!

    Re: Lynda's musings:

    1. That crash is so horrifying. It all seemed so avoidable! I honestly can't imagine what was going through the driver's head. GET OFF THE DAMN TRACKS. And now she and 7 others are dead. It's just so heartbreaking. (Also: I have decided that I will never sit in the front of the train ever again).

2.50 Shades is not my scene. Jamie Dornan is hot, but I can watch him be creepy-hot in The Fall (on Netflix. It's excellent, go watch it, everyone!) and Dakota whoever has all the charisma of lukewarm toast. I'd pass for that alone, even if I didn't have problems with the entire book series/media circus/botched portrayal of BDSM/once again conflating abusive relationships with normal romance.

    3. American Sniper is not one I'll see. I don't begrudge Bradley Cooper any of the accolades he receives for it, but I tend to find black-and-white portrayals of war to be gross and frankly a huge waste of an opportunity to say something insightful.

    4. It's currently thawing and all the buildings are dropping giant chunks of ice, so...lunch hour will be an adventure.

    5. Good luck at your physical, Lynda!

  • Ugh.

The GM of DH's club just put in her resignation. (moving to CA)   She was awesome.  She had been there since the start of the club.  Had made the place a nice laid back atmosphere.

There is no one I can think of in house that could be a GM.  So that means change.

It will be a year in a few weeks since we got here.  DH as changed jobs 3 times in the last 3 years
Not that we are going anywhere.  The board LOVES DH, they are building a new 1 million kitchen for him as we speak.  He got to design it and everything.   But when there is a new GM, that again means change.   How will that affect DH?

In some ways they need some new blood.  A lot of the managers have been here a while and I feel like they are kind of complacent. You know, "this is how we've always done things." type of people.  DH has been a breath of fresh air.  New ideas and stuff.   As I said the board is totally committed to him.

Sorry for the ramble.   I loved the GM, she's been so nice to us, really made us feel welcome when we moved here.

  • I had not heard about the train. I'm sorry if this is terribly insensitive but if you saw a train coming and decided to get back into the car to move it- I'm glad darwinism did it's job.

I have no interest in 50 shades at all. I agree with @ashley8918 on the America Sniper thing. I was asking my husband why. Why Chris Kelly? Why his "story"? There are thousands of soldiers who go through the exact same thing so why is he singled out to be some super special hero?

@lolo883 congrats!!!!!!!! Can we come up with a moniker to call it? My friend went with Harold and my SIL went with Grace (neither actually used those names).

First you should never sit on a track waiting for traffic to move.  This is a suburb of NYC. not some little town in the middle of no where who hasn't seen a train in decades.   Those tracks ARE being used, often actually.     If you are stupid enough to sit on the track when those bells start ringing and those little gates start coming down, well that is time to MOVE, not get out of your fucking car and check the damage.   IT"S A FUCKING CAR.  There are things called insurance and body shops.

As far as why Chris Kyle's story? he wrote a book called American Sniper. Cooper bought the rights even before Kyle was killed.  I'm guessing he liked the book and simply something he felt would make a good movie.

  • 50 Shades was a shit book that they'll turn into a shit movie. Blech.

Fi saw Snipper with his dad and dad's war buddies, and they loved it (duh). Not my cup of tea.

Trying not to give up on school. TK give me strength!

    Good Luck!

I figure that 50 Shades can't get any better than the trailer with he music crescendo just as he kisses her in the elevator. No interest in ready or watching it...but I could watch that 10 second clip on repeat for a while ;)
    ~xoxo~

  • My dad worked for Amtrak for 30 years.  He used to work the overnight shift and he worked out on the lines.  He said one night a woman tried to beat the train, but the gate fell onto the hood of her car.  She refused to move because she didn't want the paint on her hood scratched any further.  My dad and co-workers ran over to the car to get her to move or get her out of the way.  She was adamant about not moving.  Finally, a co-worker said to her, lady if you don't move you won't have a car.  It finally kicked in her head that the train would destroy her car.  She backed it up.

It is unfortunetly very common for people to think that trains can stop on a dime.  Typically, by the time you see the train, there is no way for them to stop in time to avoid hitting anything on the crossing.  It takes over a mile to stop the average train, which many people regretfully do not understand.

This accident is very sad.  I hadn't heard all of the details until seeing this post.  It could have easily been avoided.

    Congrats lolo!

  • Congrats lolo! It took me a few minutes to get what you were hinting at.

The plane crash video is ridiculous. I am glad to hear that there were survivors. I just wished more passengers survived.

I started reading the first Harry Potter book. Since I only vaguely know the story, I am looking forward to seeing if it's as great as everyone claims it is.

  • Congratulations, Lolo!

Intense patriotism makes me pretty uncomfortable, and "war hero" narratives too. I like my country and I don't wish to be another nationality or anything, but I just...those kinds of things and the soldier worship don't sit well with me for whatever reason. So movies like American Sniper just make me feel a cocktail of negative emotions. That's probably partially because we look at war etc. kind of differently up here and there is a cultural disconnect for sure, so I don't want to offend anyone or start any arguments about it because I realize that our culture's views ARE different generally on this one, but yeah, less than zero appeal to me. FI, who loves first-person-shooter video games and war history and action movies, feels the same way and cringes every time he sees the trailer on TV.

I am even more opposed to Fifty Shades, though. It's bad fiction, bad BDSM, bad romance, and nothing more than weird fanfiction wish fulfillment written by a hack, and the movie looks just as bad as the books. I won't even watch it to make fun of like I did Twilight. I enjoyed watching the Twilight movies with a bottle of wine and some girlfriends to laugh at it with, but I can't see doing that with Fifty Shades.

  • Congrats lolo!! That's so exciting.

    1. I can't even imagine what that woman was thinking. FI lives next to a fairly active train track and I can't imagine trying to do any of the stuff she did.

    2. Sigh. 50 Shades. I'm a big reader of Romance novels, so usually I try to defend the books other people call dreck. But 50 Shades is so bad. And the depiction of a real BDSM relationship (as other PP's and some reviewers have mentioned) is really horrible. So I wish it would just go away. I don't like hearing about supposedly sexy relationships when one of the people is just a controlling asshole.

    3. I don't really have any interest in seeing American Sniper. I'm much more likely to go see Jupiter Ascending when it opens this weekend.

    4. It snowed here yesterday. We got like an inch and a half of fluffy white stuff. But still enough for people to drive like idiots.

I actually thought that was one of the great things about the movie, is that Chris Kyle's intense patriotism didn't really come off in the best way. There were a lot of moments where the side-eye from the other characters was like "no dude, you're kind of off your rocker a little bit." There was the hero worship from within the military, of course, but it wasn't all red, white, and blue kool-aid.

yeah, in the movie it was clear his wife did not get his patriotism.

One thing I didn't like about the movie was when the brothers met in Iraq.   You see him once after they are in military and then nothing.  It didn't seem to fit into anything other than proving dad was right on who was the sheep dog. Which wasn't necessary IMO.  That point was already proven earlier.   IDK, I felt that scene added nothing to the movie.

  • Congrats lolo!

I heard about the plane crash in Taiwan but not the train crash. Both are horrible.

I have no desire to see American Sniper, and I'm not sure if it is even playing at a theatre near me. I kind of want to see 50 Shades because I'm curious about how it turned out, but I'm not going to go see it.

It was 20C warmer here than anywhere else in Canada earlier this week. It's still above freezing and lots of rain in the forecast for today, although it is just grey out right now.
