How to Elope - Please teach me.

Re: How to Elope - Please teach me.

  • I worked on boats for over a decade.  Between late-Aug to Mid-Oct most of the boats were out of the water in the boat yard.    The one I spent the most time on was out of the water for a good 6 weeks, then it was limited hours for another month.

I was not salary.   Nope, hourly and tips.    I knew I would have 6-8 weeks off, unpaid.  Know what I did?  I budgeted.  Shocking I know, but  I had a "boat yard fund" and every paycheck money went into that fund.   When it was time to be "laid off", not really laid off as I still got all the benefits, but when I knew I would have off I had the money to pay all my bills, travel, etc.   We all did.

I don't know how hard it is to take a your contracted salary and figure budget it for the whole year?  Heck it's easier with a contract then when you work for tips like I had to do.

I have aunts, cousins. friends who are all teachers.   All of them took the summer off and travelled, hung out with the kids if they had any.     A few worked summers at the beach early in their career.  They had the time off, liked the beach, single, no kids, money was great.   The work paid for their summer fun, rent for the beach house, etc.   They all still had rent/mortgages back home.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
