    I wouldn't go unless the family member was very close, but then again if they were that close I'd talk to them about why they ought to rethink some stuff.

    I also wouldn't offer an excuse--"I'm sorry, we can't make it" is the only thing a human adult needs to say to another human adult when declining an invitation.

    I don't know how she would react, but have you considered politely telling her why her plans are so out there rude? If your mom is right and she just doesn't know better, maybe there's time for her to learn and fix her ways before she does something outrageous. 

    To answer the question- I wouldn't go. That is beyond rude and I wouldn't take part in it. I would, however, happily attend a properly hosted PPD. I don't care what you call it, if you feed me and wine me I'll celebrate with you.
