Help deciding on a dress!

Hi everyone!  This is my first time posting.  :)

Okay so long story short, I bought a wedding dress on Saturday! Woo! But then over the weekend I started wondering if I would rather have another dress I was considering. The bridal shop didn’t place my order yet so I have some leeway.

I’m writing to ask for your opinions!

The Whitney dress below is the one that I ordered. Pretty, flowy, although I’m a little concerned about how it’s fitted through the hip and butt.  I felt good in it and it was very flattering on me.  I’m feeling like I’m not sure that I want to have such a form fitting dress.

This dress below by Essence is the one I am considering switching to. It has the same kind of lace and the same overall feel but it’s looser around the hips and has more flowy fabric in the back.  It makes me feel a little more comfortable to know that I’d be more covered.

The catch?  I haven’t been able to try on the Essence gown because no shops near me have it.  I’d have to order it blind.  The woman at the bridal shop thinks that’s a bad idea to just order a dress that I haven’t seen in person, but I can’t seem to get it out of my head.

What do you guys think??

  • Ordering a dress that you haven't tried on is a bad idea so I agree with the bridal shop. These dresses are two completely different shapes.  You have no way of knowing if the shape of the second dress will suit or taste, vision and figure.  What will you do if you order the second dress, try it on and then realize that you hate it?

  • I would imagine that the second dress would be more flattering and comfortable to wear for most women.  Can you try on a similar gown or at least one with a similar silhouette?  Or are you willing to drive a distance to go to a store that does have a sample of it that you can try on?

  • I agree with PPs, find a way to try it on or forget about it.

There was a dress I saw online that I really fell in love with. I called every bridal store I could find in a 100 mile radius, and no one had it because it was from the designer's new collection, so it wouldn't be out till fall and by then it would be too late for me to order. I ALMOST ordered it without trying it on, but I knew that could end badly. So I had to (sadly) forget about that dress.

I got over it, though, and found a different one that I really love. I was really glad, in the long run, that I hadn't ordered the other dress because there ended up being several dresses I fell in love with online that I got to try on in person and none of them looked good on me at all. It's a very big risk.

  • Too big of a risk.  Pictures are very deceiving online.
  • can you try on a similar silhouette to the 2nd dress?  if not I'd be very leery of ordering it unless your shop has a good exchange or return policy in case it doesn't work

Most dresses I liked in pictures did not look good on me. I personally would actually look much better in the first dress you picked than the second, which, I know, sounds kind of weird, but a fitted dress helps me have curves. There was a beautiful Watters a-line I kept falling in love with online. On me? I looked like a cupcake. It was not good.

I agree with others, try it or something very similar on.

Edit - just wanted to say that first dress is totally gorgeous.

I would ask the bridal shop to hold off on ordering the first dress BUT I would also not order the second dress until you can try that dress on or something very, very similar. It's a beautiful dress but you could get it on and realize you hate the way it fits, that it's not flattering or that it's just not your style. The second dress does look more forgiving and universally flattering but you could find that it gives you no shape or the wrong shape and end up hating it.
  • Don't order a dress blind. I lusted over one dress and it looked HORRIBLE on me. Go with what you know, the first one is gorgeous and I'm guessing you'll look like a bombshell in all the curve. The second one looks frumpy to me.
  • Thanks so much everyone for the advice.  I'm going to stick with the dress I ordered!
