Maybe I'm posting this in the wrong place but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I live in PA but am getting married in NY (family hometown). I know that we'll need a marriage license but I'm not quite sure as to which state we would need to apply in. If it's in NY state, will there be a process that we'll have to go through beforehand to obtain the license? How far ahead should we be planning for this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Marriage licenses, which state?

  • you get your license in the state that you are getting married in.  So in this case NY.

i do not know the policies of NY.  Google is your friend.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • To get a license in New York, you have to go to the county clerk. You both have to go and show your ID. I believe you have to get the license 2 days prior to the ceremony (I could be wrong about that part).
  • Google the local courthouse for the county you're getting married in (note, county, not country lol)

I live in Indiana but am getting married in the state of Michigan. We can apply for our marriage license online but then we must pick it up in person, both my FI and I, and we must show state issued IDs. The license must be filed within 30 days of application.

Not every state or county has the same rules, so check it out and if the info isn't clear on their website, give them a call.

  • Ditto PPs you need to get it in the county where you are getting married.  You should check the COunty Clerk website for more information on any waiting periods or other requirements.

  • Yep - get it where you're actually getting married.

Note, though, that the requirements may be different depending on if you are / are not a resident of that state. I looked at getting married in FL for a little while, and the requirements for a FL resident included a 3 day waiting period - meaning you couldn't get your license Friday for a Saturday wedding, you had to get it by Tuesday. However, if you were from out of state (as I was), that requirement was waived.

  • DH and I had to go together in our home county to get out marriage license. We had to have license and social security card. We got married in the same state we live so was not a big deal.

I would just Google and call.

  • You can go to any county clerk in NY to get the license.  There's a 24 hr waiting period and the license is valid for 60 days.

  • Thank you for your help! I am going to call the county clerk's office in NY as soon as I can to speak with them...their website said something about a sixteen day waiting period, it was a bit unclear. Either way, it should get cleared up as soon as I speak with someone.

    Thanks again!
