The New Knot is coming-- here's what you should know about Community!

Hi All!

We hope you have already taken a moment - or two - to checkout the link to the beta for the new theknot.com that has been up for the last month. If you have, you saw that the new site will have a completely new look and feel. The new site aims at creating a totally personalized experience. We have spent the last year re-platforming the site to create a seamless experience whether you are on a computer or a phone. We also simplified and reorganized the navigation to help members more easily navigate the site. And, we are launching new customizeable tools.

The relaunch is going to happen in a few weeks. The entire site is changing, but we are not getting rid of anything.  We know there will be a lot of questions and feedback after the launch. Most of the community is going to remain the same but the Home Page will look different.

Before you read the rundown of the changes, please know that we do want your feedback. The changes that we are making to the community will enable us in the long run to add features and functionality that we haven’t been able to do in the past. Your feedback and thoughts will help us to take an amazing community and make it even better!

Here's a bit of a rundown on the changes to the Community:

New Location for Community in the Global Navigation Bar:
-You're not going to see the link for Community when you access the beta link
-The location where the Community link will appear is being finalized now. I’ll update you as soon as I know!

New Community Home Page:
-The Community Home Page is still being tested. But, we’ve got screen shots for you to checkout. (Just please ignore all the wording with test or testing. The screen shots are from our development site and we are actively working on the Community Home Page.
-At the top of the Community Home Page we added easy access to the Wedding Month Clubs and Local boards
-A keyword search bar is at the top of the screen so members see it as as soon as they come into the community
-Popular or interesting threads will be organized on the homepage under Featured Posts and Most Popular sections. The Knot's team will curate the featured posts and the Most Popular discussions will be threads with the most comments from the current week
-Important updates from us are located under the "From The Knot" section
-The new look is designed to provide a simpler and mobile friendly interface, including a list of the Wedding Club Boards on the right side of the page

What Else is Changing?
-For a period of time after launch, there will be NO avatar management. This means that users who do not have an avatar will be automatically assigned one. The assigned avatars will not be not editable
-Current existing avatars will remain, but they cannot be edited after the launch
-I will give you notice before the launch date in order for you update your existing avatar before the changes are in place

What's Staying the Same?
-All existing/previous discussions and comments will remain the same
-All actions in the community (posting, replying, love it's) will remain the same
-You will still have the ability to edit or change your username and signature

What's to Come After the Launch?
-Improving existing features (like those annoying quote boxes and the ignore feature)
-New members will be prompted to create a unique username (no more generic Knottie#'s!)
-More robust landing page, this isn't the be-all and end-all, we've still got big plans for the community homepage!
-Ability to edit avatars will return
-Plans to add the community to the Planner App

I’m here to answer any and all questions you have about these changes. I’d really love to hear feedback too! I will continue to keep you all updated with any more changes coming to the community, but please let me know if you have any concerns.

Please look for another post in the coming week regarding changes coming to the entire site!

The beta site is located here: https://beta.theknot.com/

Sounds like this will be pretty cool! I like the new UI, from what I can see here. Much cleaner.

As long as I can find the forums, I'm good.

Ugh, it is going to be just like the new Bump. Not a fan.

Are we going to get the same (or similar) posting guidelines as The Bump? If so, how will they be enforced. Right now, bumpies are getting random warnings but arent being told what they did wrong or what TOS they violated.

Have the gliches that affected The Bump going to start happening here on TK?  They were automatically changing Bumpies usernames to their real names which were supposed to be private.  This was a HUGE violation of people's privacy and TB acted like it was no big deal that people's real names and locations could have been found out.  They called it an "inconvenience", I find it to be a big violation of internet safety.

Will we also start seeing the same type of censorship on TK like has been going on at TB?  They have been deleting posts and banning any user who seems to challenge any of the changes.

Ahh, good question. I heard it was quite a shitshow there recently.

    Those are very valid concerns.

The issue that arose with members on The Bump's usernames being changed was an isolated issue that only happened on The Bump. I am working very closely with our tech team to make sure that any changes that are coming to the community 1. I'm fully aware of, and work directly with tech to test out in order to avoid such issues and 2. you all will be fully aware of before the changes are made.

And no, currently, everything on here in terms of moderation will remain the same. Post-launch I am going to be working closely with our mods to make our TOS clearer, so there isn't so much gray area when it comes to warnings/bannings, but that isn't going to change how the boards are moderated.

Please let me know if you have anymore concerns!

I touched on this in @OliveOilsMom's question, but essentially what I would really love, is to just make sure everyone in the community has a better understanding of why warnings or bannings are issued, but this
will not change how any of the moderation is currently being done.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but can I still go under Chit Chat and the different boards?
ETA ugh, nevermind I can see on the right hand side of the picture there are still the boards.  They are all staying though, correct?

Earlier today there was a thread on The Bump commenting that users Emails were being displayed, again. The thread was of course deleted.

I was also banned on The Bump for criticizing how the site was handled. Forgive me if I'm a little hesitant in believing this transition will be smooth.

I fully understand your hesitancy and concerns, I'm here to answer any questions you have about those concerns before this launch or after. But please keep in mind The Bump and The Knot are separate entities, what happens on The Bump is generally isolated over there, and should have no impact on The Knot.

I'm also going to look into the issues with emails being displayed, I can't guarantee I can get back to you with any answers but I'm at least in a position to make sure it's been looked into or figured out.

You say you're making it more mobile friendly, can that please include a permanent login feature like the desktop?

Currently, if I refresh the page or hit the back button or open TK in a new page, I get logged out. I have the auto-fill password and username in Safari enabled, but it's still an extra page to go to (or two, because lately TK has been advertising the mobile apps before getting to the login page.) I would love a keep me logged in feature on mobile.

Is THAT what's been going on with mobile? I thought I was taking crazy pills every time it told me "you must be logged in to do that."

Also I secretly love how much of a shitshow TB is because A. I do not plan to have a baby anytime soon and B. when I do I'll just bug y'all betches anyway, and C. it is always SO JUICY (no pun intended. Because childbirth.).

Why won't we be allowed to change our avatars anymore? Not that I have plans to change mine any time soon, but I know some people do like to change theirs.

It says you will be able to change avatars later, just not right away.

@lovesclimbing yes! That is something tech is definitely working on. I can't say for sure right now if it will be ready for this launch but I've made them aware that this is something that needs to change. I'll follow up with them about this.

@Cookie Pusher that feature will be returning post launch :)

I was going to "love this", but alas, I have to be signed in to do that feature.

Yea it's kind of wonky. With safari for iphone, often when you go to a page you had kept open, it will auto refresh, which logs you out. I read a story about that once and it has something to do with how much memory/RAM/storage/something the phone has. I've tried just keeping TK always open in my browser so I don't have to re login, but then it auto refreshes. That's not a TK problem, but rather a phone problem, but could be avoided with auto login.

Anyway, thanks @KnotRiley‌ I'm glad it's on your tech teams radar.

I think that this only makes sense if it were to be the case for every webpage and forum, which is clearly is not. So that doesn't sound quite right to me.

But I've definitely had it happen in the middle of browsing (so if I didn't even close my browser).

Well, yea, I meant the refreshing all the time on an iphone is pretty standard and isn't a TK problem.

Can we get screenshots of the new UI within threads? Quoting is the best feature on TK's forums, and I'd like to know if/how that's going to be preserved.

@flantastic None of the UI in Community is being touched (I've made sure to verify this with our product team a few times), this is only for the homepage of the Community

I like the new format of the quotes (how it automatically tunicates). It's basically done away with the mobile quite issues.

Would it be possible to move the notification drop-downs (like the globe and the messages icon) a bit farther in? I have to stretch my page quite wide to be able to see the forums AND the notifications (the other alternative is to just slide right-and-left continually, which is a bit annoying)?

I have no problems with the new layout so far, but just FYI, I find the blue of the thread titles to be difficult on the eyes.

I think I hate it. Things are cut off for me on iPad, which is what I mostly use to be online now. Not all of the forum list shows up, and I can't scroll down past a certain point TO see the list. Also, no box for me to post shows up. Well, it does, but it's like a squished line filled up by the "follow us" links. I guess I won't be around much anymore!

Not minding much the changes to the new knot, looks very pretty! However, I do miss a few things. Under planning basics I wish things were still broken down by topic. Now we have to search through 18 pages to see if there is an answer to something. Also unhappy that the timeline in the new checklist is very off. Any idea of when this will be fixed?

I'm having issues with the new checklist - it has all of my due dates set for "after September 2015"... my wedding is in August 2015.  Any ideas on what is going wrong?
