Ugh- name changes suck

Changed my name at SS last week and just got my card! Yay! But now I have to change everything else. Went to book a flight for next month, and had to decide which name to use. Do I use my new name and bet on changing it before my flight? Or use my maiden name and more or less postpone getting my new license for a month? I chose my married name (good kick in the pants to get to the DMV) but my frequent flyer number didn't match my name. No problem. Called up the airline- they need a copy of my marriage license and my new ID to change it. I don't have my new ID yet, so I'm in a catch 22. I ended up booking with the new name, and when I submit the name change paperwork, I'll have to request they add my miles too.

Is this how it is for everything? Next up is the bank and credit card. Already in the process of changing it on our home loan.

Re: Ugh- name changes suck

  • I found the most random things to be the most difficult.   Credit card?  No issue, a few I didn't even have to send the marriage license.

Airline miles cards?   It was like I was stealing someone identity.  They are air miles. Not only are there weren't many of them you bastards keep upping the amount for a free ticket AND not making many flights available I can't even use them anyway

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

They don't take the old one away? Good to know. (When I moved states I had to relinquish my old ID when I got the new one).

Although I have been leaning toward the path of least resistance in general (i.e., not changing a damn thing legally, but not being pissed if someone wants to call me Mrs. HisLast).

  • I haven't changed it on anything but SS and driver's license yet. Super fun when I go to pay with a credit card and they ask for ID. I hand them an ID with a DIFFERENT FUCKING NAME and they just go "mmmmkay thanks!"

Where I live, they just punch a hole in it, which I guess means it isn't usable any more? My aunt actually got excited and changed her name and license before her honeymoon but not her passport. Thankfully she had both forms of IDs so they let her on the plane.

  • That's why I waited a year to change mine. With our move, job changes, etc, I just wanted to be all settled before dicking with that so I wouldn't run into problems.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Everything has been pretty straightforward for me except for changing it at work. Every time I give them the piece of information they ask for, they turn around and tell me they need another thing. So I've been attempting to change my name at work for two months and have made only minimal progress. Last I heard our IT team was working on it but it'll probably take weeks. I missed the quarterly business card order because I have no idea when it'll be changed and don't want to hand out cards with my new email (based on last name) if no one can use it yet.

On another note - I was a little alarmed by how EASY it was to change it on my SS card. The guy at the SS office didn't even ask me for ID - just my marriage certificate and had me verbally answer a couple of questions (address - which they gave me the option to change while I was there, mother and father's name, city I was born). Didn't even need to sign anything. Fairly certain someone with half a brain and my marriage certificate could've gone in and basically stolen my identity and had my new SS card mailed to their house.

They punched a hole in it, but she had another one with no hole in it (she thought she lost it and ordered a new one on-line then found). It's not technically valid, so if she gets pulled over, she has to show her new ID, but at like Target they just want to make sure the name matches.
  • Credit card was so easy, I basically logged on and said I changed my name. That's about it.

But FF miles required all sorts of documentation.... Basically, changing your name sucks.

YES, omg. All the time! I have various stuffs with three different names (maiden name, old married name, and new married name), and I was so worried about having issues. No one even bats an eye.

I'm sentimental so I have every license I've ever had. I have the one with my 16 year old picture on it. Then my state makes you get a new one when you're 21 so I have that one. Then when I moved back home from AZ, I needed a new one so I have that one. Then I got a new one with my married last name so that's 4 MA id's that are in my purse hahaha

My little sister stole mine when she was 16 to go get a tattoo. She left me with the expired one.

I have all of my old licenses intact.  But I just said they were lost and I got new ones.  I had this thing as a teenager about getting a new one every year with a new picture.  You couldn't pay me enough now to waste that much time in the DMV.

Because AZ is fucking awesome and doesn't tax you to death. That's all it is in my state is a way for them to bring in $30 every 5 years. Just like excise tax on cars, inspections on cars, gun licenses- all of that is basically just a way for the state to make money. We used to laugh so hard in AZ that old people had pictures from when they were 20.

  • But we also don't pay for early education and want to allow doctors to turn away women with complications from abortions if they don't support their decision. But hey, at least I don't have to deal with renewing my license until I'm old!
