DH does the nose thing...But the other thing? WUT?

Dear Prudence,
My husband empties his nose into the sink or into the shower by simply blowing with water. I cannot stand the sound. Every morning and night I hear it, and it is very loud. He also makes loud sounds every morning and night when defecating. It’s like he has diarrhea every day. When he comes to bed after this I am completely grossed out and it has killed our sex life. What should I do?

  • DEFECATING?  Really?

    *snickers*
  • I feel like this dude might need to see a doctor.

I wondered about that too.  I mean, is it as bad as the LW says it is, or just...loud?  Because the LW sounds excessively squeamish, so she feels like an unreliable narrator to me.
  • both of those are absolutely disgusting.

agreed - but she also needs to get over it because chances are it's not going to change... as long as he's thoroughly washing his hands ... with soap... for at least 20 seconds... with hot water...

Yes to all that.  Plus, also...
These folks need a second bathroom - well insulated for sound and far away so she can hear him since it bothers her.

  • Hee. She didn't say anything about sounds he makes at other times. Maybe she's ok with those.

no, she does not need to "get over" it. she can have an adult conversation with her husband about using a tissue like an adult or getting more fiber into his diet.

  • I would probably ask the poor  man if he is OK or if he needs to make a doctor's appointment.

Yeah, Mrs Conn, you should do that.

  • it sounds like he is using a neti-pot or something similar. does she want him to go outside or just stop doing it and have screwed up sinuses? I'd think as long as he's washing the sink or shower afterwards, that shouldn't really be an issue.

as for the loud poops, maybe he needs to go see a gastroenterologist or make some dietary changes.
  • i thought of this post a little bit ago - i made up some saline for my netipot, but i didn't measure and it ended up being really potent. there was considerably more screaming and less snorting.

Yeah, DH does netipot...I'm too chicken to try it.

He said you have to get it right or it's painful.  Costco had a whole kit with 250 packets and two netipots on sale for $15 for the last month.  It's the best deal I could find on that stuff.  It should last DH like 4 or 5 months.

I had sinus surgery last July and have to do saline rinses twice a day ideally to the point I mix the stuff up by the gallon.  I also thought of it after I posted that maybe this is what the blowing snot sound was.  Poor DH when I was lining up the stuff for post-op and started having to do them because of aiding the healing process, but he recognized this stuff is part of the process and certainly gives me the "yuck!" if he walks by as I'm finishing up.  He now makes it a point to stay in the other room at all costs.  DD and DS both think it's the "gross yet cool", but before I had to do them post-op I couldn't imagine EVER doing them - now I realize had I been able to do them before I may have avoided a lot of problems but things were so broke in there it wasn't a possibility.

I had sinus surgery about 6 years ago and went through a similar process. it was something like 4 cups of saline per nostril per day. I would sit in the tub to do the rinse for the easy clean up factor. From a noise standpoint, you would have thought I was drowning - you're not really allowed to blow your nose full force until they take out the packing. After that point it was a lot of honking, and Busy-like exclamations over the massive clots and rainbow colored mucus.

I will sometimes buy the pre-mixed packets (they're good for travel) but I generally just use baking soda and kosher salt to make it at home.

@conn - try it. it really does help.
  • I had to do netipot-esque stuff in middle school.  I say esque because the neti pot thing didn't exist 30 years ago.  3 times a day meant I had to do it at school.  That's awesome for a 12 yo girl.
