Re: Favorite Movies

  • Did anyone say Jurassic Park?

That's my "black hole" movie- I get sucked into watching it no matter what my plans may have been, lol
My black hole movie is Mrs. Doubtfire. I will watch it whenever it is on TV, not matter the time of day or if I had other plans. But also, Jurassic Park is great.

  • I haven't seen many of the ones listed here. But some of my all time faves are
    The Town
    The Departed
    She's the Man
    Legally Blonde
    Identity
    Green Street Hooligans
    Scarface
    Heartbreakers
    Drop Dead Gorgeous
    Little Rascals

So I started to read The Princess Bride and thought the book was so stupid I couldnt finish it.

Am I the only one who hates this book (thus why I wont see the movie)? Do I need to turn in my ovaries?

I hate the movie. Hearing people quote it is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

The only reason I would ever consider seeing it is because it has Saul from Homeland and I love him. (and his beard.)
I love Cary Elwes but he can't save the movie for me. Maybe Saul from Homeland can do it for you though. Pretty much everyone I know loves it, I guess I just don't get it.
I think that if I had not watched it so many times as a kid (if I had not seen it until adulthood), I probably would not like it either. I think that it's one of those movies you have to watch as a kid first to appreciate it. I have a co-worker who recently watched it for the first time, and she thought it was awful.
That could be why I don't see the appeal. I never watched it until a couple of years ago.

  • I'm just here to add:

Mmmm, I love the Coen Bros. Their version of True Grit was so good.

  • I'm with you in that there's a lot of classics I haven't seen. I think probably the big one is Forrest Gump.

I've heard the movie The Princess Bride is pretty different from the book, so maybe try the movie anyway. It's definitely campy, so if you don't like that kind of thing maybe you won't like it. I think it's charmingly bad, but definitely bad. Star Wars is much the same in that regard IMO.

My go to sick day movie is Big Fish. I basically love just about anything Tim Burton. Same with Tarantino- Inglorious Basterds and Django are both really good.

Donnie Darko. Life is Beautiful. Amelie. Fight Club. Any of the Studio Ghibli movies. If you're in the mood for a romance movie, Kate & Leopold is basically the only one that doesn't make me die a little inside and even gives me warm fuzzies instead.

My favorite movie ever is Back to the Future II so I would say that! Adventures in Babysitting, Almost Famous, Ferris Bueller, My Best Friend's Wedding..

I just found out that a few of my friends have never even heard of this movie. I immediately planned a movie night for them.
  • Grease (never knew how many sexual innuendos were in that movie until I got older)
    I Love You, Man
    When Harry Met Sally
    29 Dresses
The Holiday (even though I find Jack Black to be totally weird in it)
Any Disney movie ever made (working on collecting them all)
I would say that Jumanji is my black hole movie

I remember when I was probably 8 asking the adults what "the chicks will cream" means, and no one would tell me (obviously). It was not until I watched it as a teenager that I realized how many sexual references there are.

Ya thanks to Grease I used to lovingly refer to my newborn baby sister as a pussy wagon, to 8 year old me it sounded like a cute pet name.
I just laughed out loud. In a very quiet office.

I know!  2010.  Well, I figure that if it is old enough to be on TCM, I can call it "vintage".  It will be on next week.  They are also running the complete LOTR series.

I've been in the hot tub with DH for the last hour discussing this thread.  Can I add some that I forgot?

    Some Like it Hot
I Remember Mama  (I cry every time!)
The Wind and the Lion (Personal favorite - I'm a sucker for a good Jerry Goldsmith score.)
Jezebel (for people who don't "get" etiquette and tradition.)
    Catered Affair  (wedding movie)
    Mrs. Miniver
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    The Third Man
    The Color Purple
    Dr. Strangelove
    Places in the Heart
    Steel Magnolias

  • Some of my "I could watch a millions times and not get tired" ones are (though I'm not claiming they are good)

    A League of Their Own
    The Parent Trap (original)
    Bring it On
    Back to the Future 1/2
    Indiana Joanes Holy Grail
    Ever After
    Kate and Leopold
    Speed
    True Lies
    Notting Hill
    Air Force One
    Bend it Like Beckham
    Bourne 2/3
    Frequency
    Hook
Memento (but it has to be from the start)
    My Big Fat Greek Wedding
    Mr Holland's Opus
    Office Space
    Serendipity
    Truman Show
    Wedding SInger
    Zoolander

Like I said, some of these are not great movies.  But I love cheesy 90's action/disaster movies.  And while I loved Jurassic Park, it gave me nightmares.  I like being at the top of the food chain.  ;)

Since I have a lot of favorites, I'll just go with the ones I watch over and over.

    Howls Moving Castle
    Spirited Away
The beast with a billion backs
    Mean girls
    Memoirs of a Geisha
    Zoolander
    Pet Sematary
    The Shining
    Dr. Horrible's sing along blog

Howl's moving castle being at the very top.  I have a sappy story that might make you guys puke but I'll tell it anyway. My first night living with FI we had the mattress on the living room floor because we were so poor we didn't have any other furniture and the bedroom was very poorly heated.  We did, however, have a laptop and a sense of wonder that we got to finally be together (LD relationship for 7 years) We fell asleep watching Howl's moving castle and now anytime we are stressed or sad or just want to be romantic we watch that movie. The book also holds a special place in our hearts.

  • Oh man I forgot Meet Joe Black. It's not really a chick flick, I promise. H was skeptical and he loved it. Definitely up there.

And of course there's Mean Girls.

  • I'm in love with Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers. I have their collection but my favorite one is Top Hat.

Oh, yes!  I didn't include any fluff movies in my list, though I love them dearly!  I just listed critical mivies that changed us when we watched them  They don't make many like that these days.  It seems the box office is the most important thing.  I don't watch movies based on cartoon super-heros any more.  (Christopher Reeve WAS Superman!)  I couldn't enjoy "Something About Mary" and it's clones.  I'm too old for that.
Currently, I'm watching the original version of "The Producers" on TCM.  Now THAT is funny!
Fred Astaire never wore a tuxedo in the daytime, and for wedding scenes in his movies, he was properly dressed in a morning coat, though there was a plot line about whether or not cuffed pants were proper with it!
