Hello everyone! I'm not sure how active this board is, but it seemed the most appropriate to post in first. I just got engaged last week while on vacation and am not ready to start planning yet - still enjoying the excitement! However, one thing FI and I have talked about for years is how to incorporate and be respectful of our different religious beliefs. FI is Catholic, as is his family and mine. I was raised Catholic but have not identified as Catholic or Christian for almost 10 years. I don't currently have a church, but I have researched both Judaism and Unitarian Universalism extensively. At this point, we've agreed on an outdoor wedding, not in a church of any kind. FI hopes to find a priest who will receive special dispensation of some kind and will be willing to "tone down" or remove most of the Christian elements while still having a spiritual/religious element to the ceremony (New or Old Testament readings, some sort of blessing, etc).
Is this a possibility? I would love to hear from anyone who is in a relationship where one person is more "traditionally" religious than the other, but where both sets of beliefs were incorporated into the ceremony. FI is extremely understanding and we've discussed this particular "issue" for years before getting engaged, but I'm still really nervous about being pressured into doing a lot of Catholic premarital counseling, etc. or having my beliefs looked down on or dismissed.
And if the stormy weather came...I'd just kiss you in the rain...
