Card Box Ideas

Hi everyone,

I'm having a difficult time finding a card box that fits my style, but isn't super expensive.  I hate the traditional looking card boxes (you know, the ones that look like a cake and they're decorated the flowers or what not).   Birdcages don't really go with my venue (getting married by the water).   I like the idea of just having a open box or basket; however, my mother insists that the cards need to be locked up and secure.   I can see her point, but I can't find anything that I really like.  

I did find something on Etsy, but the seller wanted $50 for it.  No Way!   I'm not crafty, so making something is out of the question.   Does anyone have any suggestions?  I hope to spend no more than $25 (and that's even pushing it).   The less expensive the better.

We bought some nesting boxes on sale at Michaels.   My dad somehow stacked and then secured all of them together.  Then cut a slot on the top box.  The lid was secured too.     We had to basically rip the box apart to get in there. 

This was not ours, but what I'm taking about.  Ours were less than $20

I've seen boxes like these at places like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc, so you probably wouldn't have to do much/any painting. Adding your names is optional.

My mom and I decorated a super inexpensive birdcage to look like a fish tank.  We put seashells in the bottom, strung fish into the cage etc.  Our reception was at our zoo's acquarium, but you could do the same if your reception is near the water (beach?).

I'm either going to make something like this myself using silk flowers or I'm going to buy the vase and bring it to my florist and have them use real flowers that match our centerpieces.

I've already found a really big vase at Michael's for $24.99, and I know I'd be able to find a coupon to make it even cheaper if I wanted. It's not necessarily secure, but if it's sitting on a table it's pretty obvious if someone is reaching up in there to grab cards out of it.

Where is the opening? The top? Or is it cut into the side? I can't tell by looking at the picture.

@wrigleyville my plan is to leave an opening the top. The vase I found looked to be plenty wide enough to slide large cards into even with flowers around it.

If I had the knowledge or tools to cut the glass I'd prefer that so that they'd be a little more secure.

I bought a hinge-lidded box from Michaels and mod podged some fabric on it to make it pretty.  Once everyone was at the reception and it was full, I just locked it up behind the bar for the rest of the night.

We made ours out of a vintage suitcase. Not just faux-vintage like you might see on Pinterest, but real vintage- as in out of my parents' attic! My mom dressed it up with luggage tags and whatnot.

I get the "security" need, but your level of security needed may depend on your venue and the coordinator's ability to put it out of the way of non-guests and secure it for you to collect at the end of the night.  Our suitcase was wide open and guests just set their card in it, and we didn't have a single issue.  

If you do go for something with a slot, make the slot pretty wide. The wedding I just went to, our card didn't fit in the slot, and we felt really weird just leaving it out. We put it on top of someone's gift and are hoping it made it home with the happy couple.
