    "Hand cancelling" is basically postmarking them by hand, with a stamp, instead of running them through the automated machine.  I read the original post (before editing) and OP is basically saying it's a pain in the ass to get the post office to do the hand cancelling anymore, so wedding guides should stop suggesting it.  

    Hand cancelling is sort of a dumb idea now anyway, since the mail system is pretty automated and the invitations will get ran through other machines for sorting in at least 2 post offices (the sending office and the receiving office, and who knows where in between).

    Hand cancelling is still necessary for invitations that have three 3D stick-ons, DIY frills, or wax seals.  These tend to get stuck in the machines.  It has never been an etiquette requirement to hand cancel wedding invitations, only to hand address them!
    I don't understand this OP at all.
