Flower girl dress

Hi all--- was curious.  How did you all coordinate the flower girl dress?  Did you try to have it mirror your own wedding dress or the bridesmaids dresses?  I want to go with something that's sweet and cute for a 5 year old and was thinking of a white dress with a purple sash (purple's the main color) but didn't know if it can be anything.

Re: Flower girl dress

  • For flower girls, I think it doesn't matter.  You can have her wear the same color as the bridesmaids, or ivory or white to match your dress.  I'm leaning towards ivory with a sash to match the bridesmaids. Most of all just make sure she is comfortable in whatever you decide!
  • A flower girl can wear anything.  I personally like colored dresses for flower girls.  I just don't understand the point of them wearing a white dress when typically everyone else in the wedding party doesn't.

  • For our flowergirl, we just told her mom the wedding colors and said she could wear anything in those colors or white. They went shopping and picked one out. Done. She actually ended up wearing the dress for some sort of fashion show a couple weeks before the wedding as well so she got more use out of it.

  • @Maggie0829 that's a good point.
  • I personally find "mini bride" dresses to be pretty creepy and inappropriate. I had requested any dress the FG's mom liked in aqua, teal, champagne, or gold... she showed up in white with an aqua sash. Oh well.

That sounds cute! I'm Latino so a "mini bride" and "mini groom" are common for me to see. When I was a flower girl, I wore an exact replica of the bride's dress. The dress was white and very conservative, so it's not like I was wearing a Galia Lahav lookalike or something.

You don't have to model your flower girl off of you, but you can if you want to. I'm wearing an ivory cap sleeve sheath dress and my flower girls will be wearing ivory too. My mom is purchasing the flower girl dress and she personally dislikes colored dresses for the FGs. It's just not a mountain I want to die on with her so ivory it is. I liked the idea of letting the FGs wearing princess costumes, but no one else seemed on board with it. Having Queen Elsa be my FG would have been awesome! :)

Whatever you choose, just make sure it's comfortable for them to move around in and be wearing all day. Nothing worse than an itchy dress on a little kid.

  • Our colors were lavender and eggplant. The bridesmaids and groomsmen had eggplant dresses/ties.  The flower girl and ring bearer had a lavender dress/tie. The flower girl's dress did mimic the bridesmaids' dresses in style.
  • I bought an Easter dress in a complimentary color (ended up being an apple green with a white lace overlay) for my ring bearer.

I prefer flower girls/ring bearers in color.

  • I purchased the dress for my FGs, but I just found a few online that I thought they would like and asked their mom which one (or ones) they wanted.  Their mom narrowed it down to 2 and asked me to pick, and said they wanted to match.  I did get them a white dress, as all of the ones their mom narrowed it down to were white, but to me it didn't really matter.  I would go off what you think the FGs would most like.  If they want to look "like a bride," then go with that.  If not, go with something else!
