Zip-up to corset dress alterations

Hi everyone! I've been checking out these boards for about a month now but this is my first post :)
My question is: Has anyone here had their seamstress convert a zip-up dress (with covered buttons) to functional, tie-up corset back? I love my dress, but I think the back of my is a little plain and I always wanted a corset one. I know a few designers will actually change the back to a corset if you request it, but mine didn't give that option and I bought the sample anyway. One bridal shop told me they could do it with most dresses and the cost would be around $100 for materials + $100 for labor. This sounds very reasonable to me, but I'm wondering, if anyone has done this, how much did it cost you? How did it turn out? Are you glad you did it?

  • I've had friends who've had the designers do it, and it's worked out really well.  There are some amazingly well informed community members here, so you might get some good responses about feasibility from them if you post a pic of the back of the dress.  Good luck with it!

  • A little bit different situation, but my mom is great at sewing and converted a formal dress I had from a zip-up back to a corset back so that one of my friends could wear it. She's not a professional seamstress by any means but it turned out great, and you couldn't even tell the dress wasn't meant to be that way.

If a professional seamstress tells you it's possible to convert your dress, I think it should be fine. It's not too complicated (usually) to remove a zipper.

  • Yes, my sister just had this done to her dress. She had purchased at Bridal Warehouse, so nowhere super fancy. I think it was a very reasonable price and looks great. They added a fabric panel for modesty, but you can't even see that once it is fully laced.
  • yes, very reasonable price! My friend had it done and it cost like 400-500$, If I remember correctly. She was very happy she did it and it gave the over the shoulder photos a little something extra! do you have a link for the dress? I'm such a dress nut, lol! I want to try on them all!!

  • my bridal shop is doing it for free because I attended their bridal show. but I think they normally charge 75 to do it
