Vet Opinions? Fixed, not ASAP anymore :)

My dog is 19.6 pounds, on the Heartguard Plus pills for dogs up to 25 pounds. He had his March dose on March 1. He JUST got into his bag and ran off with his Heartguard box and I discovered he got one of the pills out. So that makes two pills within a few days.

I'm not finding much on toxicity about this medicine. Is there anything we can give so that it doesn't absorb, or makes him throw up? There isn't a 24 hour emergency clinic close by and it's icing outside. Opinions on what we should do?

  • Call the vet.  They'll tell you what to do.

FI's parent's dog got into human heart meds.  All they found was an empty bottle.  They induced vomiting per their vet's instructions, and she was okay.  The next day they found every single pill in a pile under the bed.

  • Agree.. call the vet..

My dog picked up a mouse once on a walk, thing was gone before I could look at it.. was worried about poison because it was laying whole in the middle of the sidewalk, not squished in the road. they told me a table spoon of hydrogen peroxide to induce the vomiting and she's fine.

Thanks! Everything I found online since i had posted was like "toxicity found at 10 times the dose" or whatever and one "vet" online said they would need to eat all six to have symptoms.

I called and the place was very nice and said here let me hand the phone to our ER vet! And she said that she suspects he will be just fine and just watch for drowsiness. I don't need to give him anything or bring him in. Whew! Thank goodness.

  • I would find a 24 hour clinic and call them. Whenever I have cat problems after hours I call the closest 24 hour vet and they can tell me if it is something that requires me to bring the cat in immediately or if I can wait until my regular vet opens the next morning. They also provide information on what to monitor with the cat, so I know if I see x y z problems I should make the drive to the emergency vet, but if I see a b c kitty will be fine.
