Will need lots of bean dip this weekend NWR vent

DH and I are 98% certain my boss is transferring me to the Tampa branch office by the end of the summer. Thats great for us, and even after I leave this agency in a few years I'm on board with continuing living in tampa. Folks are happy as it gives them a crash place when they travel or go to the base for things (overall my parents are good house guests). Dh and I are looking at rent vs buy and its appearing more likely that buy with mortgage will overall be cheaper.

Now for bean dip. Dh and I are going to my parents home this weekend while I attend a seminar on the university campus there for my masters program. My mom has tipped off dh (who will get to spend lots of time with them while im in the seminar, but it was his choice to come with me) that my dad feels we should rent a year and then buy in Tampa and intends to voice his opinion while we are there this weekend. By voice an opinion, I mean he will try to shove it down our throats and get us to agree with him. I dont see that happening.

Im gonna need a good amount of bean dip....

  • Obviously you know that he means well and is just trying to give you (his idea of) "proper" advice. It can't hurt to listen, even though I'm sure both you and your H are smart people, to what he has to say. Sometimes with parents and their "advice" I've found it better to just say, "Okay, I'll think about it" and then do what I want to anyways.

FWIW, I am a huge proponent on renting if you aren't permanently living somewhere, just because DH and I want to build a house once we get more established. Especially in high cost of living areas so I don't have to deal with repairs or property tax.

    Congrats on your transfer!

  • "You know Dad, that's something to think about!"  Said in a less than truthful but enthusiastic voice so that maybe his tirade will be shortened if he thinks you are on board.  If that doesn't work I prescribe many margaritas.
  • In some situations, I am a proponent of renting before buying.

My brother and his wife moved to the DC area and bought a giant, expensive house right away. Turns out they hated the area and their commutes were hell. If they had rented, they would've known that.

I know it is a PITA to move, but it isnt always the worst idea.
