Approx. grooms cake cost?

So I know this will vary a lot, but I have been thinking about getting a grooms cake done for my FI. He's been so great during the wedding process, helps out with anything I ask, comes to all the meetings, and lets me just pick what I want (I show him everything first, but I suppose it is a little "girly").

Anyways, I was thinking of surprising him with a grooms cake at the ceremony. But I have zero clue what this would cost? I'm getting my cake person contact next week (we have an all-inclusive), and I will be asking them too when he isn't around.

I'd like to get a Bud Light box (classy, right?). So rectangle in shape, nothing super fancy. Anyone have any estimates they can throw out based on their experience so I can think about if this is feasible or not?

First, I think you rally need to re- think presenting your fi with a grooms cake at the ceremony. I think that would be really awkward. 2 options. Either save it for the reception or have it at your RD. We had ours at the RD since we would be having our wedding cake at the reception. And at our RD, people got more of a chance to see it.

You can have your grooms cake be whatever you want it to be. But prices will vary greatly.

This is the grooms cake I had made for my H. I call him monkey and he loves his Coors light. Not all of this cake was edible, just the body. It cost about $500, plus delivery charges.

  • I agree with the PP about doing it at the ceremony. That is just odd to me. Perhaps you meant to put reception? This would make more sense to me.

As far as cost. That is going to vary too much to give you an estimate.

How many people do you need it to feed? (Same number as your guest list? More? Less?)
    How intricate is the design?
Why type of flavor do you want?
What type of icing do you want? (Some things require different types of icing and are more difficult to do in others (read: more expensive))

If you already have your price for your wedding cake and plan on using the same person to do the grooms cake take the per slice price from that and go from there. I have seen grooms cakes that are just sheet cakes from the grocery store to ones that are stacked and almost more intricate than the "brides" cake.

  • Oh gosh, I absolutley mean reception!!!!

I should not post before 7 am and coffee lol.
  • Yeah, it's really, really hard to say. A box isn't too bad, but depending on your area and the baker you choose, I'd say you're looking at 100 buck and up.

Our grooms cake was done for about 100, largely because it was very simple and our wedding cake was on the larger end.

  • It's not the box that adds up for the cost of a cake like that, it's the faux bud can/bottle that does because that's typically sugar/isomalt work.  Depending on the bakery they may or may not be able to do that type of cake for you and you'll have to find one who is willing to not only do the cake for you but have another bakery's cake also being served at the same time..  Having it at your RD would be an easy way to mitigate that potential challenge.  I'm guessing conservatively depending on the size and baker this is going to be somewhere between $350-1200+.  Yes, that's a large range, but different bakeries charge different amounts, and the cooler itself is a lot of cake.  The only way to get it cheaper is an edible image slapped on a sheet cake.  It's one thing if it's a bakery that does these all the time and has spare beer bottles on hand that they make up and one who has to make/purchase a mold for it...  Really, you need to talk with your baker because everyone here is in different parts of the country.  What could be a $75 cake in the middle of Southeast Iowa could be a $3000 one in LA or NYC.

  • Hi!  I am a professional cake artist in Washington.  One thing that I would like to point out is that is is technically illegal to replicate trademarked/copyrighted logos for profit without the permission of the copyright holder.  That includes on a cake.  The bakery I work at simply won't do it.  That being said, many bakeries ignore this because it isn't strictly enforced.

My advice when clients ask for this is to create a new, unique logo (which could still be "inspired" by his favorite brand) that includes his name or a meaningful phrase.  This makes it even more special and one of a kind.  You could include a hobby for the background, favorite team colors, anything!

Going with a box shape is going to be you least expensive option.  It doesn't need to feed everyone if you are having a large cake as well.  It's the thought that counts here.  Talk to your baker about what you are willing to spend, pick a flavor that your groom loves, and you're golden!
