Timeline question

Can someone tell me where to find an accurate wedding timeline. I swear everyone I look at is different. How early do you send out STD? I've seen anywhere between 6-9 months before to 4months before. I have ours already but I don't want to send them out too early. I'm getting married in October BTW. But yeah a thread on a timeline would be great :)
Thanks!

Re: Timeline question

  • I don't have a timeline I can share (I got mine out of a book a friend lent me), but you can send STD's as early as you want.  Everything I've read said they shouldn't go out much later than 6 months prior.  So I would say you're fine to send them now for an October wedding.  We got one last fall for a wedding in July of this year.

  • Well, an STD is a save the date (unless you're talking about the other kind).  So, you can send them as long as you know the following and it will not change:
    1. The date
    2. The location (since most of the time it's intended to give people enough notice to travel and you want them to know where they would be traveling)
    3. The guest list (since once you give someone a save the date, you must send them an invitation - also why it's recommended to only give to VIPs and people you know would need to make travel arrangements)

I wouldn't go more than a year out for save the dates.  And a certain point they become pretty pointless (sending out a save the date four months in advance when you're going to be sending the invitation itself in another two months?).

Also, remember that save the dates aren't required.  The invitation time is more than enough lead time for most people unless your wedding date coincides with a holiday.  So, save the dates when you have the above set in stone, invitations 6-8 weeks before the wedding.  Pretty much anything else doesn't have to have a "timeline" (you don't HAVE to order X item by Y date) - inquire with vendors about how much lead time they need for decision making, do things when it's convenient for you and for your wedding party/guests if it is something that directly affects them.

  • Thanks Ladies!!!
and yes I'm talking Save the Dates (STD's) HAHA

  • The general advice here is Save the Dates are sent 6-8 months before the wedding, and invitations are sent 6-8 weeks before the wedding.
