What's your hangover cure?

You guys.... I'm not recovered from my friend's Saturday night bachelorette.

Sunday was horrible. I think it's the second most hungover I've ever been (or, I'm getting old, and the hangovers are just worse).  I literally couldn't keep anything down all day, and felt weak because I couldn't eat.

So here I am at work. Luckily I woke up hungry and thirsty and I've been hydrating. I had cereal, coffee, and a breakfast sandwich.  But I'm still hunched at my desk. Usually hydration and egg/cheese can help but .... gawd!

I'm thinking a pizza slice for lunch.
(ANNNND!!! I lost one of my favorite and not-cheap earrings. Maybe I'll turn the remaining one into a pendant necklace.)

Suggestions?

  • My go to is Bojangles Cajun Filet biscuit with cheese and seasoned fries...give me all the grease.

  • Coconut water works for me. And greasy breakfast foods. Mmmm...

  • Diet Coke, greasy breakfast and then pizza later on. All the carbs and grease I can get, pretty much. If I'm so hungover that I can't even eat or keep water down, I'll take a couple of Zzzquil and sleep until I can at least eat something.
  • My go-to is a fried egg sandwich with American cheese (on English muffin) and a blue powerade. I don't know why, but I need it.

In the rare occasions where I'm nauseous until lunchtime, I'll have ziti with tomato sauce with a cold ginger ale.

    Stay strong OP.

  • Hangovers just get worse with age. Now that I'm in my mid 30s, my hangovers last a minimum of 2 days.

Pickle juice. It helps, I promise. And lots of water.
  • Looks like grease is popular!

Hmm, pickle juice. I'd do it, but no pickles around. Maybe the pizza place will have pickles at the salad bar.

At least I'm not the only one with 2 day hangovers. I feel pathetic.

  • I'm 21 but I hate hangovers so much. What I usually do is drink all the coffee, and eat some biscuits with jelly. If its lunch time, I'll try to eat any kind of pasta I can. Plus tons of water!

  • Not drinking to start with!  Seriously, now that I'm in my thirties, my hangovers are terrible!  I'm at the point where I only can have one drink or I feel it the next day.  I had one glass of wine on Saturday night, and I swear I was slightly hung-over on Sunday.  I basically don't drink anymore..but maybe next time I'll try one of the remedies suggested above.

Greasey food/carbs, fountain diet coke.  Repeat.

The bolded is so true.  When I do drink I have a glass of wine then a huge glass of water, another glass of wine and another huge glass of water, repeat as necessary.  Plus I make sure I eat a nice substantial meal with carbs/bread products.  Then I eat about 6 tums and down some more water before bed.

My H tends to forget his age when he goes out with his friends so it takes a good 3 days now for his hangovers to completely disappear.

  • I've felt hungover every day for the last 4 weeks, but without the fun of drinking! :-p So I feel your pain.

Something heavy in my stomach always helps - Egg McMuffin or burritos, usually. A toasted bagel with lots of cream cheese has been money lately. And the combo of protein+sugar in chocolate milk always helped. Just don't drink milk after doing lemon drops. Trust me on that one.

  • Too late now, but the only thing that works for me is to drink a lot of water BEFORE I go to bed after drinking. At least a litre. And another litre at least as soon as I get up. It's the only thing that ever actually makes me feel better.

I take a bunch of vitamins too but I think that's probably mostly placebo effect. I especially like those effervescent vitamin tabs you put in a glass of water.

For me, I find I can't cure a hangover but I can mostly prevent it with the water and by eating a decent meal before I start drinking.

  • I'm right there with you guys on these horrible hangovers as I get older. The last time I had one it honestly felt like I had the flu!

My go to is any powerade except red (we're not allowed to have gatorade in our house as FI is a huge FSU fan), and McDonald's cheeseburgers or chicken nuggets. And lots of fries. Good luck and feel better!

  • Water and aspirin. After years of drinking and trying everything under the sun to help with hangovers, drinking lots of water during and after drinking alcohol and taking a few aspirin before bed help me feel better the next day. That and a big, black coffee.

I find that I as I get older, I cannot drink as much as I use to and hangovers are so much worse.

  • Sprite, chocolate milk, crackers.   Fast food.

Luckily I do not get hangovers very often.  Now that I'm older and wiser  I make sure I have a pace car drink.   That is what I call the glass of water I drink very 2-3 drinks.    Does wonders.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

To the bolded - H and I were both hungover yesterday. I managed to get up and around and felt okay by dinner. He rolled around on the couch and moaned ALL DAY and I swear you would've thought he was dying from the way he was acting. He hurt so bad.

Either McDonalds breakfast or if I wake up too late for that then Taco Bell.

Lots of water, Gatorade, sleep, hot showers and self- hate.

  • The key to drinking in your 30s is water. Water and lots of it, between all of your drinks.
  • I LOLd at the self-hate. That was real yesterday. My husband was wonderful- he cooked brunch (which I didn't keep down) and looked for remedies online, including looking up food and alcohol poising and roofie information to be sure I was just hungover, and not anything worse.
I felt like I was dying!

I'm actually normally pretty good these days with drinking. I know how much wine I can handle and if I do mixed drinks, I stick to vodka. You know what the issue was? One of the ladies kept buying shots. I thought they were weak cinnamon schnapps or something tame. Oh, I was wrong. Oh so wrong. .... It was fireball whiskey.  I had three.

Counting the minutes till lunch so I can get pizza. If I still feel bad later, I'll get a McDonalds cheeseburger.

Thanks for the suggestions. Again, I'm glad to know a 2 (or 3!) day hangover isn't abnormal in one's 30s. In my younger years I was fine by lunch the day after and learned enough to generally avoid all hangovers!  Gah!

Okay so two things I use to do in college based on theories that are likely not true:

    1. chug a beer when you wake up. I have heard that hungovers are basically your body going through withdrawal and a beer helps ease the process. It worked in college. But I was younger and  stupider then.

    2. Drink pedialyte. Like the stuff for babies. It replaces lost electrolytes which is another reason why you feel so terrible. Works every time. But it tastes really salty.

  • I know people swear by greasy fast food (I used to as well - and some of it may just be a craving thing), but really it's about restoring balance.  Of the "greasy fast food" variety, an Egg McMuffin sans cheese is actually a pretty solid choice.  But that's about it.

Coconut water or gatorade for electrolytes
    Bananas for the potassium
Eggs for the protein and amino acids
Tomato Juice or V8 for the antioxidants
    Water water and more water

I also tend to crave fruit salad when I'm hungover - lots of watermelon
in particular which again helps with hydration and the sugars in it help
me feel energized without the crash I would get from eating say a
    doughnut instead.

Note: I don't eat these things altogether.  But I'd probably have a banana, a spinach omelet, and coconut water for breakfast and a V8, a handful of almonds, and maybe fruit salad for lunch.

  • Fast food breakfast with a big diet coke. Immediately followed by a large blue powerade.

I have also heard that pickles work. Something to do with the acid. I haven't tried it though.

  • Smartwater, eggs, and the less drowsy formula Dramamine, plus mashed potatoes if leftovers are lying around.  Also drinking water throughout the day before drinking and throughout drinking.

  • This all reminded me that, earlier in my twenties, my favourite pub had a weekend morning "Hangover Breakfast" special that came with a 6oz steak, eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and either coffee or a 1/2 pint of beer (your call), all for $8. It was THE BEST. They played the house music really quietly and the servers didn't talk too much and they'd close the shutters if the sunlight hurt your head too.

  • Yeah, getting old sucks. I used to be able to drink everyone under the table (including the guys!) and get up the next morning, have coffee, bacon & eggs, brush myself off, and keep going. Now if I have more than 3-4 drinks in one night then I suffer for at least 2 days.
  • I might have started yesterday off with a bloody mary. I never believed in the hair of the dog, but a few months ago had a drinking blow out on Saturday. Sunday morning was hell, but after the first bloody mary things felt better.

Also I keep Jelly Belly Sport Beans around the house for long runs. They do not taste great but it is like Gatorade in a jelly bean.

  • I forgot another magical cure - a garbage plate. The ultimate drunk food AND hangover food (hopefully at least  few people around here know what I'm referring to).
  • I try to not wake up till it's gone.  Can't always do that though.  Powerade/gatorade.  Replace fluids and electrolytes.  I always need to eat.  It's like my blood sugar is super low.  Greasy spoon always tastes better, but I know it's terrible for me.  Cold water/juice always tastes best to me

  • PIzza and gatorade used to do the trick if I felt a little crummy, but I didn't even ever really get a true hangover until about a year ago. And then eating was out of the question.
