What should FOB wear?

We're having an outdoor wedding in the mountains. The groomsmen are wearing light grey suits and my groom is wearing a navy suit - both with brown shoes and belts. My dad cannot decide what color suit he should wear. Should he wear a black suit or a dark navy suit?

He's worried about the black suit "clashing" with the groom's navy suit but I'm not sure it would - or that it really matters. Thoughts?

Re: What should FOB wear?

  • Your Dad can wear whatever he likes.  He doesn't have to coordinate or worry about "clashing" with the wedding party at all.

So just remind your Dad that navy, grey and black are all neutrals and will "go" together no matter what.  Then tell him that you just want him to be comfortable and he should wear whatever suit makes him happy.

  • He should wear whatever he's comfortable in. Does he already own a suit? He could just wear that, no matter what color it is. The parents have no reason to match the wedding party. If he wore black I think it would look very nice, and classic, and would work just fine with navy. No big deal, no need to over think this one :)

Just like the MOB, it doesn't matter what color he wears as long as he is loving what he's wearing. Black will not clash with navy. Or brown shoes or belts.

  • A black suit would look very nice and it won't clash with your groom's navy suit.

People's outfits are independent of whatever others are wearing. They don't need to match.

My MIL wore all yellow, FIL wore a charcoal suit with orange tie, SIL wore navy, grandma wore a purple dress with a leopard scarf, DH wore a black tux, I wore an ivory/cafe lace dress... Pictures looked great.

  • My dad was also very worried about what he should wear. He even had me com shopping with him so I could "approve" his purchase, he was that worried about making sure his suit would "match"  (I would've approved pretty much anything he picked out). It ended up with H wearing a navy blue suit, my dad in grey, my mom's husband in charcoal, and my FIL in black. Looks totally fine in the pictures.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one with a worried father! :) Thanks for all the advice!
