Recipe help!

Tonight I'm going to try to cook salmon for DH and I for supper. The major problem is, he normally hates salmon, or so he claims. I think he just hasn't tried it in a while.

Do y'all have any especially good salmon recipes. DH doesn't usually like a strong lemon flavor but that's about all. TIA!

What other recipes have you tried lately that your reccommend?

We had steelhead trout on the grill last night for dinner. We grilled it skin side down, and before grilling we rubbed it in olive oil and some greek seasoning for one filet and olive oil and Cajun seasoning for the other filet. We served it with grilled pineapple and roasted asparagus. What does your H not like about salmon? I find there isn't a TON you can do to get rid of the salmon flavor of salmon....

I've also done this sriracha lime sauce over salmon before:

  • @labro I don't know what he doesn't like about it. I think it is from when he was little and his dad said that he didn't like it so H decided he wouldn't like it. I honestly think he hasn't ever tried it or hasn't since he was little.

  • What about a mustard or honey-mustard sauce? Or maple glaze? Teriyaki? All of those work really well with salmon.

I don't really have recipes because I kind of just throw stuff together, but those are all flavours I use for fatty fish like salmon.

  • I made salmon the other day that SO went nuts over.  Bonus, it was also easy.

Pan Seared Honey Glazed Salmon with Brown Butter Lime Sauce

  • FI does a really good marinade that's brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic, and honey. Similar to the one here. Let it sit for about a half hour and then grill it (or cook it however).

I usually am not a fan of marinades but I really love this one, and it's so easy!

  • I hate salmon.   So I'm not help.  Sometimes people just don't like certain items. There is not a way you can prepare salmon that will make me like eating it.

I love tuna, tilipa, mahi and some other fish.   I don't like salmon, trout or catfish.

@lyndausvi DH love tilapia, catfish, flounder, and mahi. I told him if he will at least try it tonight, I'll never ask him to eat it again.

Honestly, I'll probably grill a chicken breast at the same time so he has something to eat in case he doesn't like it.

Here's an idea.  DH loves salmon.  As I said, I hate it.    So he creates a meal that goes good with both  salmon and another protein I like (often it's tuna for me but sometimes it's chicken).    I get what I want, he gets the salmon.   We are both happy.   Since all but the protein is the same it doesn't really take any extra cooking time.  Extra pan, but no time wise it's not really longer.

Was coming to link this one! It's the best! I didn't even make the brown butter sauce they way it called for, just deglazed the pan with a little butter and poured that over. Super easy and yummy.

I do something very similar. I also like adding a bit of adobo sauce (the kind found in a can of chipotle peppers).

  • Place a rinsed and fully de-boned salmon filet in the center of a 1.5' piece of tin foil (skin side down). Place a few small pats of butter on top. Sprinkle on some fresh chopped dill (maybe 1 tsp per piece), squeeze on some lemon (you can grate some lemon zest too), and sprinkle a little salt. Fold the edges together, and the sides, so that you create a sealed parcel. Toss each of the individually wrapped filets on a baking sheet in the oven for 15-22 min (depending on size) at 350.

    Easy, tasty, and minimal cleanup.

I think that's a good compromise! DH definitely caters to my food choices most of the time because I'm a picky eater. I'll definitely be having him a chicken breast to eat for supper tonight (as long a he tries a bite of my salmon since he hasn't tried it in forever).

  • Two of my faves that are really easy..

marinate in balsamic dressing, pull out of oven 6 minutes before it's done and top it with grated parmesan cheese, finish cooking so it melts. Salt and pepper to taste.

If you have a whole fish, put lime juice, sweet relish, jalapenos, onion, garlic salt, pepper, and tomato in a blender, once blended stuff the fish with it, put some lime juice on top, seal it in foil and bake.. FI does not like fish and he actually ate this one! Also makes for great fish tacos the next night.

@levioosa I will for sure! I bookmarked most of these and will see what I have in my pantry to go along with it!

I have grilling planks too (like cedar wood and a few others) I may try those.

  • Does he usually go for sweeter flavors or more savory? If sweeter, I make my own rub out of smoked paprika, brown sugar, thyme, oregano, salt and pepper. It's really good. Just rub it on and bake, grill, pan fry, whatever.

@southernbelle0915 He likes both honestly. He probably leans more towards savory but that rub sounds amazing and not too sweet.

  • I do butter and honey on salmon. Or a yogurt paprika sauce.
  • Oh I love salmon! I really like to cut up some avocado, tomatoe, and red onion. Mix that with some lime juice, salt, and pepper and let sit for 1 hour. Cook the salmon like you usually would and then top with the mixture. It is so good!

  • Salmon marinated in a soy sauce and orange juice.  Pan sear with red onions, kalamata olives, and raisins.  Serve over wilted spinach.  So good and seriously looks straight out of a food magazine.
  • I usually just pan sear salmon and serve it with a fancy mustard for dipping. I have tried all of the soy and brown sugar recipes, those are good too. But searing it makes it taste less fishy to me.

If you make this recipe, you will never want to have salmon any other way. Ever.

  • If you have any steak or chicken rub spice blends, I've found salmon stands up to them really well. I love a little maple glaze (maple syrup + butter is easy and delicious) or sometimes we'll marinate it in soy with some crushed garlic cloves for like 30 minutes.

FI loves to bake salmon, but it's also really good pan-fried, especially if you like crispy skin. The world's easiest way to cook fish is in packets (parchment paper is usually recommended but aluminum foil works too). Throw some herbs and maybe 1 slice of lemon or lime, garlic, and a little white wine and then steam that sucker in the oven till it's done. Super easy, works for any fish.

  • My favorite way to cook salmon is pan fried with a hot honey garlic sauce.

Sauce is honey, hot sauce, soy sauce and garlic (to your taste).  I fry up the fish till it's almost cooked through, then add the sauce and let it sizzle for a few minutes.

Lately though any fish I've had has been baked with loads of lemon, butter and dill.
  • I like fish plain, I'm boring haha. My only thing is that I looove a crispy skin. So I get a pan pretty hot, add some oil, throw the fish (seasoned wtih s&p) in skin side down and leave it for ~5 minutes, maybe longer if its really thick. Flip it over and cook for 2 minutes flesh side down. That crispy skin is like candy to me.

  • I make mine with a honey mustard glaze or "crust" depending on how thick it comes out. My Fiance doesn't like salmon much either but he'll eat that one.
  • Ha! "Good but weird." Works for me!
