Wedding colors

We are having a fall wedding so naturally doing fall colors. I love a dark plum and kind of a reddish orange, idk the actual name for the color lol But I've been thinking for the brides maids to have plum dresses and the groomsmen to have orange vests and ties. I'm just not sure if it's ok to have them wearing different colors even though they are complimentary colors.

Re: Wedding colors

  • Every wedding I've been to had colored vests. Maybe it's just a thing in our area.
  • I agree, a colored tie will look more sophisticated rather than a color vest

There's nothing wrong with the colored vest, it just looks very high school.
This one doesn't have orange, I just love the cravat.

  • If you really want the color vests, then you should get them. I'm in the opinion of if it doesn't affect anyone else (hosting blunders) then you can do whatever you want. I think the colors will go well together. But maybe just try the tie idea and see if you like it? Enjoy planning!

Another dissenting opinion on the colored vests, especially for such rich colors like you're planning on. It's going to look very high school prom in photos. I really love the example pictures above of the colored tie with a grey vest/suit or black vest/suit. When you start looking at suit rentals, compare the two of them together if you're still stuck on the vest idea. I guess for me it just starts to get too matchy matchy especially when those vibrant colors come out in the flowers and other décor.

  • Colored vests remind me of prom. Lots of weddings in my area do this too. Still reminds me of prom.

Go with a 3 piece suit or just a 2 piece suit (vests aren't required) and add the orange tie. Check out http://www.thetiebar.com/ties?color=orange

Our GMs went with a 2 piece suit and an ivory/navy striped tie. BMs were in navy.

  • Agree with the PPs...colored vests give me flashbacks to prom. A vest that matches the suit with a colored tie or pocket square looks much better, IMO. When in doubt, keep it subtle.

  • Not a fan of the colored vests, but yes, the colors will go well together.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Colored vests don't really bother me.  Honestly, I don't really pay that much attention to what the guys are wearing to think "oh they look like they are going to prom" because, well I am at a wedding and there is a bride and groom so nothing else is screaming prom to me.  And when the jackets are buttoned up you only really see the top portion of the vest so the color isn't like BAM in your face.

  • I also think this is soooo 90s, but yeah, the bridesmaids and groomsmen definitely don't have to match.

  • No love for the colored vest from me.

You may regret those photos later.

What about a small orange boutonniere or pocket square?
