It's getting to the 60s and I want to buy a maxi skirt! At little boutiques in the mall they are always too short or a poor quality material. So help me out :) - what is your favorite maxi skirt or place to buy one?

Re: Maxi Skirts!

  • You might try thrift or resale shops.
  • I actually got some cute maxi skirts at target last year.

Totally didn't think of that. Do you think they are long skirts? I don't have long legs really but I'm 5'6“ and would like the skirt to not be above my ankles.

Well I'm 5'1 so not sure. I had to kind flip the waistband down so I don't trip over it. I think you would be fine.

I'm 5'7" and have had some really good luck at target and TJ Maxx

ETA I actually like buying the maternity ones in a size smaller than my normal size because I like the fold-over part. I find that they are longer too. http://www.target.com/p/maternity-fold-over-waist-maxi-skirt-merona/-/A-14918652#prodSlot=medium_1_9&term=maxi+skirt

  • Also try Old Navy! Last season I saw some at Loft as well.
  • I like Old Navy for skirts because they tend to carry long sizes online. I've had good luck at Francesca's too; I have two from there that I need to wear heels with, and I'm 5'9".

  • I'm 5'11" so I need long, too. I've had success at Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Gap, TJ Max, and my most favorite ever extra long skirt came from Stitch Fix.

  • I've had really good luck at target and Ross. I'm 5'9" am most of my height is leg so finding ones that are long is tough.

  • So far I'm liking Target and TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

I also feel like that sort of material shouldn't be perfect but you do get what you pay for.  For something that's almost t-shirt like, I'm not wanting to shell out J.Crew prices though.
  • My go to stores for maxi skirts and dresses are Banana Republic and the Gap. I haven't checked yet this year, but last year I got two solid jersey type skirts (with foldover waists) from the Gap and a cute patterned maxi dress from Banana - both held up well all season (and will be good this year as well) and are pretty good quality.

They always have sales especially online for 30% or 40% off so you can usually get a good deal. I'm 5'7 and the regular size fits me well (below the ankle but I can still wear with flat sandals without dragging on the ground).
  • I had to hem the Target maxi dresses I got last year by a good few inches and I'm 5'4" so their skirts may in fact be long enough for you.

  • I have quite a lot of luck with ModCloth.  I find the occasional piece that needs to be sent back because it's too short, but most of them are fine - I'm 5'10", so I have this issue a lot.  I also have some wonderful maxis that I buy from a friend who runs a vintage store.  I'm assuming the Sydney based store won't be too helpful to you, but I'd recommend shops that specialize in vintage, rather than thrift stores, unless you have a really huge amount of time to devote to shopping.

  • I have one from Old Navy that I actually really like and get compliments on all the time. It's white with orange embroidered flowers along the bottom. It was $10. I'll see if I can find some pics of it. Granted, I got it years ago so they probably don't have that particular one anymore. But it's one of my favorite summer items for sure.

Maxi dresses though. I want one but I look like I'm wearing a mumu (sp?) whenever I try one on. I don't think it's possible for curvier girls to pull them off. If anyone can show me otherwise, please do so.

I did a super quick google image search, but my recommendation would be to either get a maxi dress that is two tone, like the top is one color and the bottom is another, or wear a belt of some sort with it. It helps to split your body up and draw attention to your waist.

    Anniversary
  • +1 for Old Navy, Francesca's and Target

  • Gap and Old Navy. I love maxi skirts, but I don't feel the need to shell out big bucks for them because I don't wear them a ton. I don't feel like you can easily wear them frequently because they stick out when you do.

I have a black one from Gap that I wear on airplanes all the time and I love it!

  • I got some cute ones off Groupon Goods.  They have good basic maxi skirts and dresses.

  • I only have one and I got it at Nordstrom Rack. I'm 5'4" and it's way too long. Im workin on hemming it a good 3-4 inches right now.

My one recommendation with maxis is to get a lined one. Mine is lined to the knee. I love the look and feel of maxi skirts, but the material is so clingy, it shows every lump and bump. Often, even wearing underwear, you can see the indentation where your butt crack is! I only have one maxi because I have yet to find more lined ones.
  • i got my two that i still wear from kohls for like 15 bucks each. one a tye dye gray color and the other a solid black.

  • I'm 5-9 and all of my favorite maxi skirts & dresses come from Target. They're the only place that I can always count on being long enough. I HATE having them above my ankles. My very favorite maxi dress came from Target six or seven years ago, and I still wear it all the time!

I have a slip.  However, the material is pretty thin and slippery, thinner than the lining, like most slips seem to be, so I'm not a huge fan of wearing it.  Also, if the lining is built in, I don't have to worry about the slip showing above the waistband if I lift my arms and it happens to have slid up.  I just find it really handy to have the lining built in.  I rarely use my slip anyway because the skirts I currently own don't require one.

Well, yea, but I'm not a huge fan of shapewear.  I have one piece of shapewear that's just a waist cincher, so it just goes from high-waist/a few inches under the bust to my hips.  I've tried a few different pieces of shapewear because I'd actually like to get one that covers my butt because the one I have now has no crotch so it likes to ride up. However, even if I did get that, I wouldn't wear it that much.  Shapewear is not something I would ever want to wear on an every day basis or with casual clothes.  I pretty much only use it when I'm really dressing up.

But until you find more skirts that are lined, you might want to wear Spanx or whatever. . .especially if you come across a really cute unlined skirt!

Really designers just need to get their shit together!
