My heart attack of the day

I showed my horse to some potential buyers yesterday.  It went really well and I hope it pans out- it's a family with two little girls that want to show and that would be perfect for her.

Anyway, when I went to get her, she was laying down next to her pasture mate, Ethel.  She's kind of old and has an old injury and just hangs out.  Shelby got up when she saw me, Ethel didn't.  This is what she looked like:

Yep, she was breathing.  She laid like that for a while but then she got up and started munching on hay.  Thanks, Ethel.

  • Geez, I didn't even know that horses lay down regularly... Is it a concern?  Maybe you should let her owner know?

That face is scary even figuring if you posted it that it probably turned out OK!

  • Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeziz, Ethel!!! WTF? I'd have stopped breathing.

I don't have horses anymore, unfortunately, but I have a special needs dog that lays around most of the time. Just about every time I come downstairs, I go over and check that he's still breathing because he doesn't move or react at all unless you go over and pet him. Even on Halloween with all the kids ringing the doorbell constantly, he just laid on his bed all evening. Didn't even look.

A lot do, actually. It's sort of a myth that they sleep standing up- they might doze a little but they do lay down for the real deal, usually for about 20 minute increments, especially if they're old.  We used to have a horse that was eventually put down at 30 but he used to scare me on a fairly regular basis as well.

But what freaked me out was that she let me get so close without moving and her eyes bugging out and also not moving. Ahhh! Even though I could see her breathing and she did finally move her eyes, I still kind of kept an eye on her until I saw her up and moving and looking content.  Weirdo. I guess she just doesn't give a shit.

  • My cat fell asleep with his eyes open. I thought he had died... until he started snoring. I love this cat, but I think he got a lot of satisfaction out of scaring the bejeezus out of me.
  • I have ferrets, and they do this thing called a dead sleep where you can pick them up and everything and they won't wake up. It's always terrifying for a moment. Case in point:

  • That would have scared the hell out of me. One of my landlords had a bunch of horses on the property and the oldest/my favorite horse was laying down asleep one morning and was totally unresponsive.

At least until I finished mixing his mushy old man food an he nearly trampled me getting up to eat.

  • My beloved old dog does that to me once in a while. He sleeps on the floor next to my bed so if I wake up at night I'll lean over and check on him, and if he isn't visibly moving/breathing I'll wake him to make sure. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for him to wake up and it always scares me.

For some reason I read "WTF Ethel" like Gretchen Weiners from Mean Girls and I haven't stopped laughing.
  • Normally I don't like people names for animals, but Ethel fits her so incredibly well. It's genius. She was born to be named Ethel.
