I have contracted the plague.

Last week I felt something coming on & sure enough, I woke up yesterday like this:

My throat is on fire, my eyes won't stop watering, and my nose won't stop clogging and/or running (and as if that weren't enough, now the skin around my nostrils is burning due to so much tissue contact). I totally have the plague.

I somehow managed to rally for work and am counting down until I can go home. Yesterday DH went to get me a slushy since that is the only thing in the world I wanted. Since he knows I quit drinking soda (five months ago, yay me!) he got me the only non-soda slushy option.

You guys, it was a caramel apple slushy. It tasted like poison apples. That one sip I had felt good on my throat, but ew. I had to throw it out since it made me gag.

Today after work, I'm going to try a different gas station in search of a half red, half blue slushy. I drank some hot tea earlier but my throat was like, "Screw that crap and get me a slushy!" This will be followed by copious amounts of television in my sweatpants.

What are your go-to comforts when you are sick?

Re: I have contracted the plague.

  • Btw. I loved this post because your throat is being so vocal about it's demands.  I hope you feel better.
My comfort go-to is Celestial seasonings Sleepytime Tea,  Edy's strawberry popsicles, and Ricola  cough drops whenever I have a terrible sore throat.
  • I'm a hot toddy girl.  Boiling hot water, honey, lemon juice and a shot of Jameson.   It's my feel better beverage......

I also like a nice cold lemonade.   I'm a CT girl but when I'm really hot or have a sore throat, Del's is awesome.
  • Any and all sweet breakfast carb products.  So donuts, pancakes, waffles, cinnamon rolls, etc.  Oh and lots of ginger ale.  But when my throat is on fire I must have the largest chocolate milkshake that any place can make.  And sometimes I wish that I could half swallow an ice cube and just let it sit in my throat and slowly melt.

Hope you feel better soon.  And I hope you find that slushy!

  • That sounds like what I had. It took me two and a half effing weeks to finally feel better, and it turned into a sinus infection so after 6 days I finally went to the dr to get antibiotics.

Go to the dr and make sure you don't need antibiotics if you don't start feeling better soon! (and I hope you start feeling better soon).

themuffinman16 on the Celestial seasonings Sleepytime Tea. I drank that stuff like it was my job.
And peppermint tea. I'm not a huge fan of the taste but it's supposed to help clear congestion and it actually seemed to work.
Also, I sit in the bathroom and crank the shower super hot and inhale the steam. I started pouring some tea tree oil on the shower floor because not only did it smell good but it also seemed to help open my sinuses, and it has anti-bacterial properties so it can supposedly help to clear up sinus infections and whatnot.
And cappuccino flavored Greek frozen yogurt made my throat feel way better.
Oh yeah, and also pineapple juice. I can't drink orange juice because of my weird stomach, and I remember when I was a kid and had strep throat my dr told me that pineapple juice is actually really good for sore throats and packed full of vitamins.
And hot toddies. I drank a lot of those. They're like 20 cough drops, a pain killer, and a sleeping pill all in one mug.

  • I have the flu too. I woke up yesterday with everything you just mentioned plus body aches and a fever. I ended up making a doctor appointment for this morning because I wanted to make sure it's not bronchitis, which is apparently going around the office.

Nothing usually comforts me when I'm sick. I'm miserable and it makes me feel like H is a saint because of how he takes care of me. Right now he's finishing up some dishes and then going to the store for chicken soup ingredients.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • So many milkshakes when I was sick the other week.

  • Oh I just thought of another thing. I started getting that deep, chesty cough, and/or my chest would burn whenever I started coughing. I found that putting a heat pad at the top of my chest/base of my neck and getting all bundled up in bed to watch a movie worked wonders. With a hot toddy, of course.

  • Do you have Dairy Queen there?  I don't think any of their slushes are carbonated.  Or Sonic!

  • And to answer the question, lately my go to is DRUGS.  I used to never go to the doctor, but now I'm all about some antibiotics and medicated cough syrup.

  • I am on week three of a horrendous cold. I have taken so much meds, that it's just not working anymore.

That said, I love to drink tea in bed when I am sick. In fact, that's the only time I eat or drink in bed. I also love my electric blanket. It's so comforting and warm. I wish I had it with me at work now.

  • When we were kids my mom would make us hot jello to drink.  Instead of putting the hot jello in the fridge to set, you would pour it in mugs to drink.  You get the soothing of the warm liquid but in delicious fruity flavors!  Maybe give that a try?

A mix of ginger ail and grape juice, tea, and plain toast are my go to food and drinks when sick.

  • I'm all about the hot toddies, cough drops, and antibiotics.  I've had a sinus infection for the past week, and the one thing I will recommend is tissue with lotion!  I've been using Puffs, and as stupid as it sounds, they've really made my nose not all flaky and red!  AND I don't have to constantly rub Vaseline on my nose every time I blow it.  So even though I've gone through three boxes in a week and they're about $0.60 more a box, it's totally worth it.

  • I just had something with the exact symptoms you listed - I was convinced it was a really terrible cold and decided to ride it out.  A week in, I thought I had a sinus infection so I went in to potentially get an antibiotic.  Instead, tested positive for Influenza with a nasal swab test.

If you are still w/in 48 hours of getting sick, you can go to Urgent Care and get Tamiflu.  You can also present your ID at the pharmacy to get real Sudafed, which is only sold behind the counter but is still considered OTC (don't need a Rx to get it).  It works better than the cold medicine on the shelf.

I ate about 4 packs of Pine Brother's Soft Cough Drops in Cherry & Honey while I was down.  That and plenty of water & rest.  If it's the flu, unfortunately there's not much you can do other than rest, hydrate, and stay away from people.  You'll be contagious for a few more days.

    Feel better!
  • Aw that sucks! You should leave work and get in bed. Nyquil and sleeping for 15 hours usually cures me pretty quickly. One time in college, my throat hurt so bad that I cried eating pudding. The university doctor just kept saying it was a cold and I was like no, that's not right. So my mom told me to go to a ear, nose, throat specialist and sure enough I have tonsilitis. Didn't need them removed but did need antibiotics so keep that in mind if your throat gets unbearable.

@novella1186 I can save you water for your shower steam trick. Run the bathroom sink on the hottest it will go for about 3 minutes, then plug it. As soon as it's full, put your face directly over it with a towel completely covering your head and the sink so the steam doesn't escape. It's magical.

That's what I used to do, but we live in a shitty rental house where our landlord thinks he's the greatest home builder/installer/repairman this world has ever seen, and he effing installed everything wrong. So we can't plug either of the bathroom sinks or the pipes will bend and leak. Nice, huh?

I tried just boiling a pot of water on the stove (and then you set it down in the kitchen sink and put a towel over your head, like you said above) but FI kicked me out cuz he was trying to make me dinner lol. Oh well.

  • Orange Julius strawberry banana fruit smoothies are my hot sore throat favorites.

Pick up some good juice and a bag of ice, and get that blender going.  When the kids are sick, I turn into a smoothie making machine. The Odwalla citrus C Monster juice is great for this. Or the Strawberry C Monster.
