NWR: Baby shower gift help

I procrastinated on buying a gift for a shower this weekend, so now I have to go to Babies R Us and get something that's left on the registry. I'd rather give an actual gift than cash. I'm torn between getting one bigger item off of her registry or getting a bunch of little ones. What would you rather get as a new mom?

- $100 play gym
- $100 worth of breast feeding accessories (bottle warmer, cover, bottles, etc)

I'm leaning towards the feeding stuff because it seems like no one ever buys the practical gifts. And what do I know... maybe a play gym is just as practical as feeding stuff. What do you think?

Re: NWR: Baby shower gift help

  • If those items are on the registry then just get either or. If the parents find that they really need either item after the baby shower then they can just go and purchase it or exchange one of the gifts they received for what they really need. My SO and I ended up making a few exchanges and purchases after the shower so you really can't go wrong either way.

  • I would personally go with the feeding stuff. I find that so many people just like to pick out fun, cute clothes and blankets and stuff, so I like to give something that's more of a necessity.

  • I always try to get the fun stuff, but then so does everyone else.  The feeding stuff seems to be things people don't always get at the shower since they aren't as fun "ohhhhh breast pump, how adoable!!" doesn't quite have the same ring to it as itty bitty outfit or stuffed animals but if she registered for it I bet she wants it so that would be a great gift.  At a shower last year we all pitched in to get things from the registry and the shopper made sure and got that stuff bc the mom to be had mentioned how she didn't think anyone would buy that stuff since it wasn't "fun"

  • Holy cow, what kind of play gym did she pick out that's $100? I think the one we got for our son was like $40-$50 max! (I'm assuming it's the playmat for baby to do tummy time on with toys that hang down).

I'd definitely go with the feeding supplies! You can never have too many bottles! You could always make it into a basket for nursing/feeding, and add a few books, some chapstick, lotion, snacks, burp cloths, etc
  • Actually, the play gym was around $75 and the feeding stuff is around $110 all together. I've been rounding that gym way up in my head to simplify things, but it does make a difference because the breast feeding stuff is worth more.
  • you also don't have to buy all of the feeding stuff, If you're comfortable spending the $110 that's cool but if you could also just buy $50 or $75 of the feeding stuff.  I'm sure someone else might be last minute shopping and want to throw in a couple bottles or something to complete their package too
  • I would go for the feeding stuff.

  • Here's a Babies R Us coupon for 15% off one regular priced item - if the gym qualified for the discount that would be nice.  Or if one of the feeding items is higher end.  Bonus point to get your SO to also print the coupon and use it on more than one item

I always go practical for baby shower gifts. Most babies don't even wear half of the cutesie clothes they get at the shower because they grow out of them too fast.

You could always add practical off-registry things to a few of the feeding items - plain white onesies (LARGER than newborn! some babies never even wear newborn sizes. I get 6-9 mo for the wriggly crawlers to wear as undershirts), prefold cloth diapers to use for burp cloths, wipes, etc.

  • I'd go feeding stuff. In the long run it'll probably be more needed.

I always try to go practical and then throw in one or two little non-practical things. Like for one of my friends and I did a bath kit with stuff from her registry and then threw in a cute little onesie I found on sale (it was pink with a pink glitter skull I looked for one in my size) and little bath toy that wasn't on her registry.
  • I'm immature, so I tend to buy toys and clothes for baby showers.

But. I buy a range of onsies, So baby has some 6-9 month and 12 month shit, since a lot of people overlook that.
