Had my teeth whitened. OUCH!

I feel like the stupidest and vainest girl in the world right now. I got my teeth whitened in-office this morning and we had to stop the procedure early because I was having pain. Now my teeth keep lighting up with electric shocks. I talked to my dentist about my sensitive teeth beforehand and he said that the product they use does cause some sensitivity but that he's only ever had one patient who couldn't take it. He also helped me come up with a strategy to make my teeth less sensitive before the procedure.

I am regretting it so so much right now. I am totally miserable at work and of course I have meetings this afternoon that my bosses scheduled without consulting me so I can't go home and be miserable there instead. My teeth certainly look whiter but it is not feeling worth it at the moment...

Has anyone else had difficulty with in-office whitening? They specifically use "Zoom". I can't use products like white strips because of my sensitivity but the dentist thought this would go better.

  • I haven't but the strips and some mouthwashes give me bad sensitivity. Did your dentist say how long it might last? I'm sorry! That stinks,

  • I haven't had Zoom whitening, but I did have HORRIBLE sensitivity using the at-home trays and gel that my dentist gave me. Like, hurt to breathe level sensitivity.

Can you run out at lunch and get to a drug store? Get some Sensodyne toothpaste and just gently rub it around with your finger, not a toothbrush. Then add some lukewarm water to your mouth and swish it around. Baby Orajel can help too.

  • I can't even take the Crest Whitening strips.  I'm not sure I could handle an in-office whitening.  Lolo had a good suggestion.

Yes, my teeth do this as well. It's excruciating.  I can't even handle drugstore brands.
    Do what Lolo said.
  • Damn, I'm sorry. I have no advice because I also have really sensitive teeth, and I can't handle the Crest strips, myself. I hope you feel better soon!

  • The only whitening treatment that hasn't made my teeth sensitive is the Crest Whitestrips Gentle Routine.  You use these once a day for 5 minutes a day as opposed to the 30 minutes.  They whitened well, but it took longer because you couldn't leave them on or very long and they weren't as powerful as the regular white strips.  I can't use anything else but these.  I've had trays from the dentist and used all of the other white strips.  These seem to be the best at not making my teeth sensitive.

  • lolo883 that is a good suggestion on the orajel. I have taken a bunch of ibuprofen and am hoping that will help. I won't be able to make a store run for a while with all these stupid meetings but hopefully after work I can get some relief.

levioosa yeah I can't use the crest strips either. The only thing I've had success with was the Glo line of products (they used to sell it at Sephora). It did not hurt me at all, but the little device broke on me twice so I gave up.

Old school in-office whitening was pretty severe but this wasn't supposed to be so bad. I thought this would be ok because if only one of his patients ever had to stop early, how bad could it be? Well, I guess he's had two need to stop early.

  • I had Boost whitening done in office, and I had the exact same experience. With Boost, you do two 20 min treatments in office. First one went super smoothly. Second one I had to stop around 9 mins in because it was so painful. The dentist legit gave me novacaine shots because I was in so much pain I couldn't go back to work. It barely helped. All afternoon I was having intermittent blasts of pain (weirdly for some reason, only in my bottom teeth).

I can definitely tell my teeth are whiter, but not enough to justify $300 + the pain I went through.

Sensodyne helped me a little bit, but honestly you'll just have to wait it out. Mine was better after about 5 or 6 hours.

  • I did the zoom whitening. It does cause tooth sensitivity, but it will stop in a couple of days.
  • I had the same experience with Zoom. Lightening through the jaw about every five minutes. It stopped before I went to bed that day, thankfully. The dentist gave me some sort of numbing agent to rub on my gums which helped a bit.

The sad thing is my teeth looked worse after the trear menu, so I'm never going through it again.

  • Just wanted to jump in and say THANK YOU for the heads-up, ladies, I'd been considering different teeth-whitening options, and I will stick to OTC things, although maybe not Crest...This does not sound like fun. :(

I had zoom a few years ago and thought I was going to die.  I have very sensitive teeth (enamel never developed full due to high fevers as a child) but those fuckers at the dentist told me it would be fine.  I couldn't eat for like 2 days.

  • I had the exact same experience. I had to stop them too. I was in excrutiating pain. I also had that weird electric shock pain, mostly in my eye teeth. It stopped after two days. But I will never do that again. So not worth it. I didn't even use the trays they gave me because I was terrified of that pain.
  • OH take it from me, do not eat blueberry sauce on your waffles tonight. You will dye your teeth blue. No colored foods for several days THEY ARE NOT KIDDING.

I'm glad it has convinced one person. I'm sure there are people who would not be as bothered by the in-office procedure as I was. The pain lasted all day and actually grew worse and worse until all of my front bottom and top teeth were hurting all the time. I took a couple of sleeping pills and zonked out which was the only way I could think to stop the pain because nothing was touching it (tried orajel, advil, the sensitivity stuff the dentist gave me, no luck). I woke up this morning and they haven't bothered me yet and I'm so glad. I am still staying away from cold drinks and of course anything that could re-color my teeth.

    Overall, completely not worth it.
