Chit Chat

I just almost punched an employee: a cautionary tale.

I hired a driver a few months ago. When the driver, Paul, came in to interview I noticed on his resume that he lived on the same street as my grandmother. It's a fairly large street, so I didn't think they'd know each other. I mentioned that in the interview. He asked who my grandmother was, and I told him. He knew her and he remembered my grandfather (who died in 1993). Apparently he grew up on that street and still lived there. Paul seemed like a very kind guy, and I ended up hiring him.

Things were going well at first. Then one day he got into a physical altercation with another driver in our parking lot. The driver worked for a vendor of ours and was delivering an order. We don't take that kind of thing lightly. I talked to him and wrote him up. I should have fired him right then, honestly. But he was very apologetic and seemed to really understand how terrible it was that have that happen.

We have GPS tracking on all our of vehicles. I check it periodically. While I was in DR, I asked our plant manager Justin to keep an eye on it. While I was out, Paul was making stops at unapproved locations for hours at a time. He also stopped at the American Legion Hall for 2 hours! That same day he told a warehouse employee that he was drinking during lunch!

I fired him this morning. I explained the reasons why (altercation in parking lot, theft of time). After I thought he was gone, Justin walks back in with Paul and says, "Paul wanted to ask you a question." Paul then asks me I will give him a reference. I told him no, that unfortunately I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. I mean, aside from what I terminated him for, I suspect he's drinking while driving! Hell no am I going to give him a reference!

Paul then says, "That fight only happened because the other drive said 'suck my dick' to me" (which is not true). At that point, Justin and I both said, "Ok Paul, it's time for you to go." He then turned around and said to me, "That's fine. I'll talk to your Grandmother."

And people. I saw fucking RED. I was in an uncontrollable rage.

I got up from my chair so fast, it slammed against the wall. I chased him out of the building. Our (brand new) warehouse manager witnessed the whole thing too, and grabbed Paul and hustled him out. Justin cornered me in the entryway and calmed me down, telling me it wasn't worth it. But I'm telling you, if Justin hadn't stopped me, I would have chased him down the street.

It took me a good 20 minutes to calm down. I'm still shaking. The owner called the police and we filed a report. I called my mom to give her a heads up as well (she's staying there and my Gma is coming home from the rehab facility tomorrow).

So, here's the lesson:

Never divulge personal info about yourself or your family, no matter how nice the person seems.
Trust your instincts. I wanted to fire him after the fight, but others convinced me not to.
Never let an employee back into the building once they've been terminated. I wish Justin had not let him back in.

So that's how my morning is going so far.

  • Yikes... The guy just sounds kind of like a careless, useless dick. But why do you think it made you so mad? Like for you to get that enraged and physically chase an employee out of your building in front of other people you work with? Did you think he was going to hurt her or something?

The way he said it made me think he was going to hurt her.
  • Guys like that are, usually, all talk and no show. But still... what an asshole. I probably would've done the same thing. Don't bring my granny into this, coward! Ugh :( rough start to the morning.

  • But yes, that should be part of the lesson too. Don't let anyone push your buttons like that. I should have handled it better.
  • What a fucking shithole, OMG. I hope he was scared.

I'm glad you filed a police report, too. Even if he is all talk, better safe than sorry.

Yes, but you also don't fuck with someone's family. That's a line that simply cannot be crossed. Inexcusable.
And it's not like he just said some stupid thing like "your grandma is a bitch" or something. He made a thinly-veiled threat.

I would not have reacted any differently.
  • Hopefully he's just all talk.  I work for a truck brokerage and grew up with both my mom and stepmom working at truck lines.  I know how drivers are, a lot of them are hard to deal with.  I can not even count how many times I have been cussed and or threatened.  I'm not saying they are ALL this way, I have had some of the most polite ever but more of the crazy.

Yeah, the way he said it just pushed me over the edge. Also, it was early and only upper management staff were here. And when I chased him out, I mean that I got up and walked quickly behind him. I didn't sprint after him like a marathon runner.

Awwww, but I like picturing you just booking it after him better :)

Well, I did almost hulk smash my chair. And when Justin was holding me back, I kept trying to shove him off of me.

Very true. This is now the FOURTH driver I've had to fire. However our other driver has been with the company for 14 years and I love him.
  • That guy seems unstable. Yikes!

The interview training that I've taken recommends not even bringing up where people live; mostly, so you don't get in trouble for discrimination. It's hard because you want to chat in the beginning. And that seems like a harmless comment. You just never know.

There was a contractor a few years ago who was horrible. I think she lasted 2 weeks. She came back after supposedly leaving throwing people under the bus to her former manager. Always escort people out if they are fired.

  • I'm sorry that happened. Props to Justin because if I was Justin I would have chased him myself.
  • I definitely wouldn't just assume this guy was all talk since he's already gotten into a fight in the parking lot! I would have reacted the same way.

  • Yeah no. Somebody says something about my grandmother, my fat ass will be SPRINTING down the hall after that person.

Good for you for putting a police report on it. It was a threat from a person you know to be at least a little unstable, and that you know has easy access to the person at whom the threat was directed.

Also: YAY! Grandma's coming home from rehab! I'm glad she's doing better.

  • Wow. That's a lot of bullshit. I'm glad he's finally out of there but I don't blame you for wanting to rip him to shreds. What an ass.

Thanks!! She's doing really great with her physical therapy.
  • WTF.  I'm glad you filed a police report.  He doesn't appear to be the most stable person. Fuck Paul.  Maybe you could also ask the police to do more drive throughs in her neighborhood as well?

But yay to your Gma getting out of rehab!

  • @climbingwife, I hire and work with drivers as well; sometimes I can't believe the stuff they think is ok or say. Of course they're not all like that, but I deal with a few winners..

It's amazing what some of them think they can get away with. I had one guy who was supposed to be delivering in Connecticut. He decided instead to go to his gym in NJ. And then he crashed our van. We're fighting the worker's comp claim and I have to go to a hearing next month.

I had another guy stopping at friend's houses and going tanning. Do you morons not realize that most vehicles now have GPS tracking!?!?!?

I'm sorry but I really find this disturbing. Your coworker had to physically hold you back and you tried to shove him off you? You made a verbal interaction physical. As an employer that's wildly inappropriate unprofessional conduct. Absolutely take whatever steps you need (firing him, reporting to police etc) but I think you should take this as a serious sign that you need to get your rage under control.

LOL. I don't need to get my rage under control. I never made it physical. You, as usual, are reading WAY too much into this.

Yes, he held me back by grabbing my shoulders. The guy I fired was already out of the building. I squirmed. I came to my senses. Hardy an incident I need to seek help for.

    SITB as usual

Climbing, I would have taken it way farther than you did if I was in this situation. You don't mess with someone's family. I would have chucked something across the room at the guy and then attacked him.

  • I'm of the mind that you never, ever, ever, put a coworker into a situation where they feel they need to physically restrain you from going after someone. But if that's professional conduct in your field have at it.
