Belt/Sash Question

Hi all,

I haven't decided if I'm going to get a belt or sash for my wedding dress, leaning towards yes. For those of you who added a belt or sash to your dress, did you have it attached to the dress as part of your alterations, or was it tied separately? I've realized I'm clueless about this!

Re: Belt/Sash Question

  • I wasn't originally going to add a sash. My dress comes with a pale pink satin ribbon at the waist already and I thought that was enough (and it's attached to the dress). When I went to one of my fittings, I started playing with the sashes and realized I really loved how it looked with a little bit of added sparkle.

The seamstress cut the ribbons off the sash I chose and she's sewing it onto the satin band that was already there, so it's almost like an applique, if that makes sense. I would have wanted it sewn on even without the satin band already being there, because I wouldn't want to bother with it sliding around, twisting to the side, etc.

I bought mine from someone on a local fb board. She had it attached directly to the dress but I had my seamstress attach it to the ribbon to then just tie on since I will probably try to resell it after my wedding
  • I had mine attached to the dress - I didn't want to have to worry about it moving and being off center.  That way it stayed right where it was suppose to the whole night.
  • I didn't bother to have mine attached. It was tie-up ribbon sash and I only needed to retie it once (at the reception)

  • Thanks all! I feel like it would be more convenient to have it sewn on, since I don't want to worry about it moving and twisting around all day, but I guess it's not a big deal if it ends up being a last minute decision and we don't have time to have it sewn on. Now I just have to actually find one that I like...

  • I didn't have mine sewed on - my dress zipped up the side so it would've looked awkward. One of my friends tied my sash on at around 3 pm and it didn't move or come undone once the entire afternoon/evening. So definitely don't stress if you don't find one in time to have it sewn on to your dress.
  • @cupcait27 - That's my other concern, my dress zips at the side and I don't know if it would look weird to have is sewn into a seam at the side, like if it would make it look all bulky. I think I'm just not going to worry about this. If I find one in time to get it sewn on and that works then I will, otherwise it'll just tie it and call it a day!

  • I ordered one from Etsy, and I'm just going to tie it, not attach it.

  • I am adding a sash to my dress.  I was going to have it sewn on to the dress, but at my alterations appointment, we were trying to figure out where it should go, and I decided I loved the bow in the back.  So, I'm just going to tie it on.  I need to remember to iron the sash though!

My dress came with a belt, which i tied.   I liked the look of having it tied better than attaching it.
