NWR: (Unpopular?) Opinion:

Selfie sticks are the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I understand that it's fun to get a better angle for your experiments in narcissism or when you for some reason need to take a group photo but can't be bothered to ask someone around you to snap a shot, but can we be real? You look like an idiot holding that thing in the air.

Feel free to convince me I'm wrong!

  • Totally agree. They're terrible.
  • Completely with you on this one.
  • Haha, my cousin made his own (just random fact). I heard though that they're being banned at concerts like Lollapalooza and Coachella. Coachella specifically said "No selfie sticks and no narcissists."

I personally find them unnecessary. But damn, they do give a great group shot advantage though.

  • Oh and most of the pictures I've seen that have been taken with a selfie stick are not even at a great angle! It's way too high and too far away.
  • I always joke with SO that I'm going to buy one and use it all the time when we go out. I think they are silly but don't really judge anyone (other than maybe rolling my eyes) who uses them, it seems more like a tourist thing than a narcissism thing to me.

  • Agreed. You want a group picture, get someone else to take it.

I hate selfie sticks. I have a friend on fb who takes about 50/50 food pictures and selfies. Now he has a selfie stick. So it's 50% food, 25% traditional selfies, and 25% selfie stick photos. I hate them all.

  • Let me preface this by saying that I generally don't take selfies. My hipster little brother recently came back from China and brought me a selfie stick for my birthday. I didn't even know what to call it until FI told me (didn't even know it was a thing, that's how un-hip I am) and I eye-rolled pretty hard. But then I had my hair and makeup trial, and I didn't like any of the photos that the stylist took, so I got it out and played with it. It was actually kind of fun.

  • I think they are pretty goofy unless you use them for the group photo thing. There have been [very] few times when I'm taking a picture & I'm like "damn, I wish I had one of those stick things". But most of the time, I see people that use them & chuckle a little bit.

I don't mind selfies really. If someone's confident enough to take/post pictures of themselves, then I say go for it. If I'm having a good hair/makeup/face/whatever day (which is rare in my opinion, most of the time I hate the way I look), you better believe Imma be whoopin' out my iPhone and documenting it.

  • They're awkward and I think they make you look like an asshat. Stop being self-absorbed and ask a rando to take your picture.

They also seem like something that should be in a bundle purchase with a purple fanny-pack...

  • I don't even know how to take a good regular selfie, much less try to wrangle my phone on a stick.

But the only people I've seen use them in real life are the big busloads of Asian tourists in our nearby national park and I think that people on big vacations kind of get a pass for dumb stuff like that. I understand wanting to take photos however possible when you're on a transcontinental trip so I just shrug.

  • I hate selfie sticks. Not because they make you look ridiculous, which they do. Not because they are unnecessary, even though they are. I hate them because I work in a museum and those damn things are a nuisance. We had to ban them.
  • LOL. I see them everywhere now. Not just that, they're so damn hard to carry around. I have a lot to carry on my purse. I love photography but I stopped lugging my DSLR because it's too heavy to carry. I don't need an extra thing.

For those who don't like the selfie stick, there is always selfie shoes.

  • Right there with you! Can't stand the things. How hard is it to just hold your damn arm out? When I was in NYC last month I saw some people walking down a bridge, arm in arm, the selfie stick in front of them. I gagged.

  • I hate selfie sticks. I also hate asking a stranger to take a photo. They never take a good photo, never. They always leave too much head room, don't get the background, cut someone off or some other bad composition offense. Sometimes I wish I wasn't a highly trained and skilled photog so I wasn't so damn picky about photos FWP :(

These are April Fools Day gags

  • They are so dumb. The first time I ever saw them was on my honeymoon in December. It seems like EVERYONE in New Zealand had them. They make people super unaware of their surroundings.

I have heard of a few museums that have banned them, actually.

  • Are the shoes real? That must be a joke. Every picture would give me quadruple chins. I mean, how far could you lift your leg??
  • Apparently they've been banning selfie sticks in many famous art museums. I was at the MOMA recently and every single person seemed compelled to get a selfie in front of Van Gogh's Starry Night, sort of like this dweeb:

This shit makes me insane. Like, what is so important about YOUR STUPID FACE that you think it needs to be included in a photograph of an artistic masterpiece? Protip: if you post a photo to FB of Starry Night, people will realize that "you were there." You don't have to insert your face into every fucking thing.

And do you just walk around with it on? I feel like I would trip on something and break my phone.
