How should I have responded?

Holy shit, OP. That's horrible. I'm so sorry.

My boss said that to me once. I just stared at him. I had 100 comebacks in my head bu tI couldn't say them to my boss. 

I had a coworker tell me once that my eyebrows were my best feature. I immediately said, "Is that your nice way of telling me I'm ugly?". She seemed super embarrassed. But seriously - think before you speak!

OMG at first glance I thought you were telling her to flick a boogie into this woman's hair.

Do you wear glasses? The director of my department has this way of looking over her glasses and saying I beg your pardon and it can shut down anyone. That has become my go-to response when someone says something rude to me.

I'm  an "I beg your pardon" person, as well. A polite thing to say that carries a metric buttload of contempt.

I usually don't wear glasses, but I have an involuntary left eyebrow lift that just happens, and that works. (My daughter once said to her brother, for the love of god, Moose, if you see the eyebrow, stop talking. Immediately.)
