Not an expression but one thing that makes me super ragey is when people pluralize their last name with an apostrophe. I can't tell you how many posts on FB I saw yesterday that were like "Happy Easter from The Smith's!"

So I studied English for a while in college and I still don't know how to correctly do this. My current last name has no 's' on the end. When I change mine to FI's last name, it will. I'm currently a bit anxious about when/if we ever have our names written on something to show possession, say a sign on our door or some crafty shit like that, whether it should be the Jones's or the Jones'. I have no idea. Someone explain it to me.

I'm an editor, and . . . tbh, there's zero consistency in this rule. Strunk and White says "Jones's" unless you're talking about someone biblical (you'd say "in Jesus' name"), but AP style says "Jones' " and Chicago style says "Jones's". So I guess that's two votes for "Jones's."

How dare you make me accidentally do work while I'm trying to procrastinate from work.

This. My last name ends in an s. My work follows Strunk & White, so I write it like "Charcoalandblush Jones's purse" for everything now.

Yup. You can really do it either way. As a journalist, I always use Jones' because that's AP Style.  I also personally think it looks much nicer without the extra s.  I also think it sounds better to say "jones" rather than "joneses."

Journalist background here too so I'd do Jones' for possession too. I also agree that I'd probably write happy Easter from the Jones rather than the Joneses for non possession. Sounds weird to me.
