  • Those are so pretty! Our wedding was so small we didn't register. But since I broke a plate two nights ago, I'm debating going and buying a new set. Ours is wearing down and I'd love to pick something out with H.

  • Also wtf to the person that said that to you.

  • I really like those dishes. What the fuck kind of person tells someone their choices on a registry suck?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • What the fuck?!? Those dishes are awesome, and Noritake is a great brand. That person can suck an egg. And kindly remember the gift receipt.

We didn't register for casual china cuz we couldn't decide on what we wanted (got plain white porcelain with our Target completion discount later) but our fine china is Mikasa Antique White Platinum (just soup, salad, and dinner plates, no dinky cups and saucers). We got all 12 settings and I've already used it 3 times.

Those dishes are awesome!  I seriously don't get people when it comes to weddings... it's as if they think their opinion all of a sudden matters to you.  Hopefully the other people she tells about the dishes won't pay attention to her crazy.

I felt a bit silly registering for dishes, because FI has a full set that we use every day, I have a white set of 8 from Crate and Barrel that were mine before we met, and we use on special occasions (but is discontinued so I can no longer get more), and I also have an entire 8 setting set of vintage ones down in the basement that I don't use often since they require hand washing.

But, I started adding up how many people we'd have if we ever hosted, say, Thanksgiving, so I went ahead and registered for these basic ones at Crate and Barrel.  http://www.crateandbarrel.com/set-of-8-essential-dinner-plates/s141742  They're super affordable and I'm only asking for 2 of each plate type, to make 16 settings.

But now I'm wondering if I should pick something slightly more expensive just so more people could buy a place setting, instead of basically there being a few that people can buy since they come in sets of 8.  We have a large guest list and I'm worried our registry isn't large enough.. I don't want to make it difficult on people.

  • We just officially unpacked the dishware we've gotten! We love it - and we got it at BB&B, too.

My parents have the same brand (but round and in black), and they said the mugs were REALLY hard to clean. So we registered for these (but think brown on the inside):

If someone had said that to me, I would have been really upset. I love the stuff we registered for. In the words of Stephanie Tanner: "How RUDE."

  • WTF?! Why did that attach 8,000 times?

    I liked it.

  • Noritake is awesome, I don't know what is wrong with the person who told you it was ugly.

....Though I am curious to see what they think is better...

This is the set I registered for from Target. And I got it, but H didn't like the mugs so we took it back.

So we still have our Correlle

  • I love your dishes..they are gorgeous!!  I seriously don't get the point of buying off the registry, unless you absolutely KNOW for certain that the couple wants or would love the off registry item.  We received about 10 non-registry items, and we literally kept one of them.  We received a set of three silver nut bowls from Macy's that apparently were about $200.  The thought was very nice, but they were so not us, not to mention the fact that we have no room for extras in our kitchen..living in the city in an older house is a great way to prevent ever becoming a pack rat because there is simply not enough storage space :-)

I usually buy on the registry or give cash. But any gift someone gets you is thoughtful. We had a few gifts that were off registry and I loved them. My best friend bought me a spice rack which I never bought to register for, and I use it all the time.

  • Rude. Hope that person remembers a gift receipt.

  • @lolo883 My husband is home for a few weeks, so busy with him, and when he and I aren't doing something, my life consists of grading research papers. Spring Break this coming week, though, so maybe I will have some more online time.

Yeah but even if it's thoughtful, how useful will 3 random place settings of plates that are someone else's taste be?   Hopefully they'd be returnable so larrygaga can have a full set of the dishes she actually likes and wants to use.

  • Those are the exact dishes we got, though we didn't get the flowered dessert plates/bowls. I love them. Screw her.

  • I love your dishes, and I would buy myself a set if I could!

Here's where I stand, Its one thing if you didn't register for anything which gives people the option to give you a check or whatever they want. Because you did register you are providing guests with a list of something you'd like (or for them to buy something similar at a different price point).

For someone to say "I didn't like the dishes you picked so I bought you different ones" is poor taste. It would be far more appropriate to show up to the shower gift in hand and say nothing further. A gift is never required, but neither is criticizing someone for having different tastes than your own. Hopefully there is a way to return the rando place settings. I still can't get over the fact that they needed to tell you how they felt about your choice in dishes. SMH.
  • ohannabelle I love that set!

It was my mom's friend and she's that older lady in your life that believes she knows better than you on every subject, so you best listen up!

  • Ohhhh. pretty I love those. We have a mixed set, he had a set of heavy stoneware he thinks is great and I hate. I prefer Corelle bc its lightweight, goes in the microwave etc so we have my set of square plates and bowls from there. Hopefully one day his stuff will disappear although he doesn't like mine either so who knows what will happen

I'm only going to register for corelle, if I register for any dishes, but I haven't chosen a pattern yet. I already have 2 sets of Fiesta, and last summer I bought a 4 place setting vintage Johnson Brothers set that I love. What I don't love is hand washing so China would never get much use.

ETA: This is the china, which is appropriately called "Day in June"... If I ever spot more for a good price, I'd add to the collection.image

  • Larry - that is crazy rude! I love what you've picked out.

Annabelle - my mom has china from her aunt that looks exactly like that.

This is what I have. White everyday dishes from Target and my fancy Mikasa china (platinum crown).
  • I love seeing everyone's dishware.

Mikasa Emory for our daily set, and Lenox Venetian Lace for our fine china.

  • Larry the only thing I don't like about your dishes is that I don't have them, and probably can't ever because they look breakable and my heart would break a little with each one I broke. They are gorgeous!

We're going with Corelle daily eventually. Right now FI has enough to get us through day-to-day, and we won't be hosting anything for a while, plus we're going to be moving (to an as-yet-unknown locale) within the next couple years, so I don't really want to buy anything more that we'll have to move until we get to a point where we're more sure to establish a life.
