To be fair, every single thing in that show is exaggerated because it IS a sitcom. I like them all, but Ross can be a bit tiring even for a comedy. Also fun Friends fact, I learned a few days ago that Phoebe and I have the same Myers-Briggs personality type (INFP). She's my favorite so I was stoked.

I'm older, so I watched Friends from the first time it aired. Maybe it's one of those shows you had to watch in the 90s, or maybe it just doesn't translate well into current times. But I LOVED this show. Friends is one the best shows that has aired. I cried when it ended. Yes, I did.

The characters and the situations are exaggerated because it's a sitcom. Ross is meant to be annoying for laughs. Monica is meant to be crazy and controlling and nutty for laughs. Phoebe is quirky. Chandler has issues with his dad. Joey is dumb and sleeps around. Etc, etc - it's all exaggerated. That's pretty much how sitcoms are

Yeah my boyfriend keeps saying this when I'm watching the show and react. It normally goes something like this

ChemFanatic: Oh my god, why is so-and-so like that? Why do that they do that?

SO: Chem . . . it's a SITCOM, that happens in a SITCOM. What did you expect?

ChemFanatic: oh yeah, I keep forgetting that. **Tuck my tail between my legs and walk away in shame; forget and resort back to my original silly ways**

I get so emotionally involved in shows and books. I don't know why. I am working on that because obviously it makes it less enjoyable for those watching with me aka my boyfriend.

FI is a lot like this. I'll be watching a comedy or drama and he'll go on and on about "that isn't realistic, they should really do this" or "what she did was stupid and impractical" and "this person is so annoying, why does he have friends?" He kept saying this while I was re-watching "Friends" and I finally just said, "If these people were smart about relationships or careers, this show would have been over in one season, if that, because it would have been hella boring."

Take Bella from "Twilight:" most people don't like her because her one "flaw" as a character is her clumsiness. The characters on "Friends" are . . . um, quite flawed, and they are exaggerated flaws and these people have exaggerated problems, but we all still know someone whose Type A personality or free spirit or tendency to rush into commitment too soon has gotten them into trouble. I relate to the characters of "Friends" waayyyy more than I relate to Bella, who is instantly loved by all the boys of her new school and trips sometimes.

By chance, do you have an arts background? Because FI and I are both writers and we're always critically thinking about how we shape media and media shapes us and good lord, I just felt like I was writing a college course description writing that.

I do not. I can barely draw and I'm not very good at writing. The closest thing I come to arts is the crafts I attempt to do in the loneliness of my own apartment. lol I'm an engineer so there is a lot of critical thinking associated with that I guess :-P

I HATE Seinfield, I could never identify with any of the characters. I don't do everything Rachel would do, yet I feel I identify most with her. My sister identifies most with Monica. She would never take a little vacuum to vacuum a larger vacuum, but still... similarities are there. At the end of the show, Ross started to annoy me, although his situations were still funny.

Isn't there a name for that? I know that in the Office (which I loved) Michael Scott got worse and worse as the seasons progressed and someone told me there is a name for it so that's what I figured was going on here. I just can't remember it.

    I need to watch Seinfeld.

  • I didn't read all the comments... but I am one of those freakishly obsessed Friends fanatics.  I've watched every episode at least 20 times.  I own them all on DVD and watch usually at least one a night, which means I usually watch the entire series twice a year.

Are they all crazy?  Of course.  But it's hilarious.  H loves it too.  I was so sad when it ended, wished there were more seasons, etc.  And I wish current sitcoms were funny like it.  I can't STAND current sitcoms.

Let's talk this about this interesting sitcom.

Oh wow, so I'm watching Friends for the first time ever. When I was young I wasn't allowed to watch it and I've been meaning to because it's on Netflix and well I was born in the 90's; I almost feel obligated to watch it.

Wow is it horrific. I don't know why everyone thinks it is so amazing but holy cow! These people! Like is this real life?
No. If it was real life, nobody would watch it. For that matter, if drama or writing or art of any kind was real life, nobody would go to a movie or read a book or buy a painting or see a ballet or watch a TV show.

If it was real life, all the Friends would just go to work, and come home, and maybe drink a beer or a glass of wine and watch TV in their sweats for 30 minutes of airtime, probably while eating a frozen dinner.
The apartment would be 1/4 the size, Joey would get a job, Chandler wouldn't have 5000 sarcastic zingers for all occasions, Ross wouldn't scream at his boss about a stolen sandwich. There would be no monkey. Phoebe would never be allowed to sing in a cafe. Rachel would have a bad hair day.

(The Monty Python guys would never walk into a cafe of Vikings singing about spam, Lucy Ricardo would never have tried to repeatedly sneak into Ricky's show, The Three Stooges wouldn't have poked each other's eyes, and Charlie Chaplin wouldn't walk like that. )

Her hair always does seem to be perfect. It looks so beautiful.

I most definitely need to recognize that this isn't real life. It's obviously not realistic. Like I mean the whole being able to travel to England multiple times and yet they always say they are poor. But I sometimes get to into a show and I just need to remember "obviously this isn't real. It's an exaggeration."

  • If you don't like it...why do you watch it?

I can't stand the Real Housewives shows. Too much yelling, too many pretty rich women with problems. Not my deal. But...I don't watch it just to hate it. I just don't watch it.

Also, I've totally played the pivot scene out in real life because no one I know owns like a tape measure so we just "eyeball it". Never a good plan.

I don't know why. I am just drawn to it. I stopped watching it for a couple of days and then I was craving it. I just had to finish it. I know it's weird. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe I actually do like to watch the show in some crevice in my brain. If anything it helps create a fun thread :-)

  • My college roommate and I were HUGE Friends fan. So, our senior year we were living together in an apartment and had met previously in one of the dorms that had a North Wing, a South Wing, and a West Wing, but no East. (Or something like that.)

Freshman move in day we go to that dorm (Mac) and start asking freshman where Mac East is. The Freshman, of course, are confused already because they are still getting their own bearings and are like ".....There is no Mac East' and we tell them "No, our room is supposed to be in Mac East!"

THEN we pull out a campus map, put it on the ground, and decide to try and get INTO the map like Joey does in London to find Mac East.

Wow is it horrific. I don't know why everyone thinks it is so amazing but holy cow! These people! Like is this real life? I won't bother to go into detail about Ross Gellar because that guy is a complete grade - A *sshole.

But Monica and Chandler just got engaged (yeah I've gotten about that far). It was beautiful. I loved it. I hate Monica btw. In real life no one would want to be friends with someone who is so self-involved, selfish, that high maintenance and that much of a pain in the butt. I digress. Beautiful engagement. I am sitting here thinking there is absolutely no way this could be ruined. For once I am okay with Monica being on the screen. I actually am okay with Chandler for the most part though he seems very homophobic. I feel sorry for his poor father.

Well Monica ruined. Man did she ruin it big time. her behavior would have the etiquette board up in arms. This is actually why I'm posting. Just wanted to just say "holy cow look at the shitshow that is about to start AND it hasn't even been 24 hours!"

1.) This maniac turn a beautiful engagement into it being all about her. Screw Chandler! Monica is freaking engaged and everybody better be focusing 100% of their attention on her!

2.) She flipped out on Ross (hate that guy) and Rachel for making out in the hallway. They were stealing her thunder (not her's and Chandler's, just her's). Also, she didn't even get angry at Ross who just would not shut up about getting laid.

3.) Told Rachel she was jealous of her getting engaged. We all role our eyes at this whenever we hear someone say this. I rolled my eyes BIG time . . . though to be honest Rachel was a little jealous.

4.) The NEXT morning Monica pulls out this huge book and is like "everything is planned, Chandler you better not touch a damn thing."

Goodness gracious, I would be so nervous about the upcoming nuptials. I don't know why but I keep watching this show. I don't know if I enjoy the torture or the constant feeling of embarrassment of these people. Or maybe it's the sense of obligation I feel to watch it since I'm a 90's kid. I know it's stupid but I had to post. I've been watching for a while and I finally just had to come on here and be like, holy cow, how did people enjoy this? Did viewers actually think these peoples' behavior was acceptable or were they just as horrified as I am right now?
    Hahahaha!

Yeah, I hated Friends. I could never really get into it. It has that whole "sitcoms are meant to have really over-the-top characters" thing going on, and the over-the-topness was too much for me. Also Ross annoyed me, Joey was too dumb to function, Monica was shrewish, and Rachel was DULL AS DISHWATER. Only Phoebe occasionally made me laugh, but even she could get on my nerves with that space cadet shit.

I felt similarly about Sex and the City sometimes (I remember I watched it a LOT in college, but occasionally had to rant and rave about the fact that all 4 of them are so narcissistic that watching the brunch scenes drove me nuts because they didn't converse so much as wait for their turn to talk about their own issues.)

ETA: none of this is to say that I don't like dumb shows. I can recite more Family Guy than I will ever admit in public.

Pam- So my work review went great, until the boss randomly/ accidentally said "I love you". It was awkward.

Me- Was it like the Friends episode where you then reached in for a hand shake as he stood up and you grabbed his crotch?

That is so freaking hilarious. How do you "accidentally" say I love you during a review?! And I loved that episode, too!

I was actually telling my coworker how sometimes I feel like the Friends episode where Rachel's boss and coworker would go on smoke breaks and have all these great work conversations and ideas, so Rachel pretended that she was a smoker to feel included. I told him that he and my boss make me feel that way because they are always going on smoke breaks together. It makes me feel left out :(

ETA: none of this is to say that I don't like dumb shows. I can recite more Family Guy than I will ever admit in public.
My 2 favorite shows. I don't think we can be friends anymore.

    Noooo!

(Actually I enjoy SATC. I'm constitutionally incapable of watching any show for very long without making fun of at least one aspect of it, though, so I get testy even with the shows I love.)
