I ordered programs from an Etsy seller for our wedding on the 4/30, on March 23rd.  I requested 15 programs, which is not a big order, and told her that I needed them no later than the 15th.

Prior to ordering the 15 programs I placed an order for a sample prior to placing my larger order to make sure I would like the design.  It took 3 weeks for me to get the sample!  The seller kept telling me it had been shipped and that I would get it in 3-5 days, and there was a shipping confirmation, but no tracking updates.  So after the 5 days were up the first time I emailed her about it and she said that USPS takes longer, and that I should get it in another 3-5 days.  So I let another 5 days go by, watched the tracking info with still nothing updated.  Emailed her again, she said that the shipment was lost at the warehouse? And that it was tracked down and I should be receiving it in you guessed it, 3-5 days.  After that email I did receive the sample and it was beautiful. So I sent her my order and details for the program for 15 of them.

I was supposed to have a proof to approve by 3/30.  I let that day come and go, and didn't receive anything, so I emailed her about it and she said that it would be emailed to me by then end of the day on 3/31.  I thought ok, that's not what you originally said, but I love these programs so I'll be understanding. She sent me the proof and I did a couple revisions (minor ones) and did my final approval on Thursday last week.

She said, I will send these for printing and your order will ship Fed ex on Wednesday to be received Friday. I will send the tracking number once I have it.

Well, today comes......and I have no tracking number.... I am one breath away from emailing her a piece of my mind..... please tell me not to do so.

Re: Etsy Vent **mini update**

  • What was the postmark on the sample order? Did she lie about when things were shipped or just provide horrible customer service?

If she lied, I'd assume she lied again on your next order. If it was a real shipping problem, I'd still watch her carefully. I don't have a great feeling about this though---- but you still have a bit of time, even if she does fuck up the shipping.

I'd avoid sending her anything nasty. If she hasn't actually mailed them yet, she won't if you offend/insult her. However, I'd flame her horribly on Etsy once you have them-- people should be warned about terrible customer service.

  • I didn't keep the envelope that the sample order came in, or I would check. Now I wish I would have.

It just bothers me when I'm told something and then that doesn't happen.

Her work is beautiful, I just wish the customer service were too.

  • I agree with PP.  You want to be firm and direct in any communication with the seller, but still keep it polite, otherwise you may not get your programs in time.  Maybe you once actually have the programs you should email her to let her know that while you're happy with the product you're unhappy with the service and you'll be leaving her a bad review.

Good luck and I hope they arrive soon!
  • Etsy scares me.

So, she was supposed to ship them today?  I think you may be overreacting a bit to get crazy about not having a tracking number yet... today isn't over.  Depending on what time zone she is in, it's still early with time to get packages out today via FedEx.  I'm in AZ, it's currently about 3:30pm right now, and my local FedEx drop-off time to get packages out today is 6:30pm.  So, I wouldn't get too frustrated yet.  And I doubt she is going twice the speed limit to rush back to her office/home so she can e-mail you the tracking number immediately.

If anything, maybe send her an e-mail, kindly asking if she has the tracking number yet. If it doesn't get out until tomorrow, you should still receive it before your 4/15 deadline.  But, I wouldn't get angry or go off on her yet.

If I had the problems you did getting the sample, I would have never ordered with that seller. But since you did, I would wait a few days and then send the seller a little note asking for the tracking number. I find being nice will get you farther then emailing her a piece of your mind. If you really want to do that, wait until you have the programs. You can always leave feedback saying the orders took longer than expected. As an Etsy shopper, I always appreciate that kind od feedback.
  • **Update**

    Still no tracking number.

Do I give her another day?

  • Sometimes it takes a day or two for the tracking to show up but she should at least have a number by now.

I would probably give her another day though.

  • Since it is now officially past the time she said she would be shipping them, I don't see any problem with sending her a message along the lines of, "Hi! I'm just checking in to see if you got the programs shipped out yesterday and if you could send me the tracking number.  I'm really excited to see them."  Either she has a tracking number to give you or at least it should facilitate an update on status.

  • There are a lot of Etsy vendors who are Moms and Dads who see the opportunity to be crafty and make some extra household dollars. If the orders pile up it can be stressful because they weren't prepared for the success. Don't know if that is the case here. I would definitely have a back up plan. Etsy has good seller protection, but still, you need what you need.

I know one Etsy vendor who has 100 orders backed up right now. One hundred! It would take a full time person just to reply to customer's requests.
