Amazon Prime

edited April 2015 in Chit Chat
This is far from sexy, but I get a 40 pound bag of cat litter delivered to my front door, in 2 days, for $14.81. Screw carrying that up two flights of stairs myself. I also throw in a dog toy every time I buy something. My dog loves it when I get packages, as much as I do.

What are your Amazon Prime indulgences, can't-live-withouts, subscriptions, or simply makes-my-life-slightly-easier purchases?

Re: Amazon Prime

  • Just about everything. HBC items, Christmas and birthday gifts, office supplies, you name it. I hate going to the store.

  • Could not live without Prime! There is not much I don't buy or at least price check on Amazon

Let's see... dog food, subscriptions for diapers and wipes (until recently now that our son is potty trained... Cheaper than Costco though!), books, toys, home stuff (like kitchen tools), shoes... With their digital coupons and the subscribe and save I can get some cheap makeup/beauty stuff too!
  • When I've had Prime I use the heck out of it buying everything I don't want to bother with going to the store to get. I can't justify the $80 or whatever though but I miss it
  • Whenever I go to buy anything except clothes and some food, I check Amazon. Sometimes I'll be standing in Target or somewhere and pull the app up on my phone to price-check it with Amazon.
I live in Wisconsin and they are building a distribution center in Milwaukee. Helloooo 1 day delivery time!

We canceled Netflix; that alone covers the cost.

  • I buy so much on Amazon, I have an Amazon rewards card. I buy dog food, dog toys, gifts, shoes, things for the house.

  • We LOVE Amazon Prime. I order cat food from there too. Hell no do I want to haul a large bag of that into the house.

  • Amazon prime is amazing for us.

Mainly books and fun stuff. But I pick pretty much anything we need besides fresh food if the price is right.

  • We buy basically everything on Prime.  We have our toilet paper, paper towels, vitamins, shampoo and conditioner, Fi's face lotion... etc. all on Subscribe and Save so we save 15% on it.

My office is within the 2-hour bike messenger territory.  I actually made a thread about it when I started.  I only use it for fairly urgent things that I can't get at Walgreens, which is a pretty small subset of stuff.  But I've ordered things like batteries, last minute Christmas and birthday gifts, books, etc. all within a couple of hours.  And when I do it, I throw in some Haribo candy or Goldfish just because.

  • I love prime! I mainly use it for books and presents.

  • Yes, presents! I went a little nuts before my friend's baby shower. Amazon registry + prime = lots of stuff for baby.

I subscribe to deodorant and those cottonelle wipes. DH gives me so much sass about those wipes, but every once in a while I swear the little container is slightly to the right of where I left it...

  • See, if I lived closer to a distribution center, I think it'd be worth it, but I just don't buy enough things that make prime a sensible choice. All my money goes to bills and food.

Although putting cat/dog food/supplies and toiletries on autosubscription would make me so happy. And salt. I always forget when we're out of salt, and then we go a week without salt and I have a sad.

  • Good lord I get so much stuff from there. Anything you might need to run to target or walmart for this week I just order.

It's helped a lot with wedding DIY. Stores can be so overpriced.

I don't think Prime is worth it. Prime only applies to items sold by or fulfilled by Amazon. They already give you free shipping without Prime, it just takes slightly longer to get to you and you have to spend at least $35, which is really not that much. I think they say 5-7 business days? Maybe 6-9?  Usually, I get stuff in about half that time.

I personally can't under stand why waiting three or four days instead of two to get your stuff is worth $100 a year, but that's just me.

As for movies, H and I don't have internet at the house, so streaming movies isn't worth it. We have DVD netflix that costs $12 a month.

ETA: Also, Amazon just recently changed Prime for people who live in Alaska. You don't get two-day shipping free anymore, you get standard.  So basically, now, I'd be paying $100 a year for exactly what I can get already for free from Amazon.
  • I love Amazon Prime. That said, I have had it this past year and it expires later this month and I am NOT going to renew. What I love about it the most is the video streaming the Kindle Book first program. I have picked up some very good books for free from the Kindle Book first. The problem for me with Amazon Prime is that it's too easy for me to keep buying stuff. I am really trying to watch my expenses so if I don't renew Prime, the free 2 day shipping isn't there so I am less likely to buy. It's all about instant gratification for me.
  • I love Amazon Prime. I use it for streaming plus I buy my running shoes from them and I just bought a microphone for a podcast I"m starting. But it had NEVER occurred to me to buy my cat food with Prime. You guys just made MY WHOLE FREAKING DAY with that suggestion.

This.  And everything under the sun:  a new raincoat and matching umbrella for my oldest, diaper pail refills for the youngest, sunglasses for DH--hell, when we moved, we got our new washer/dryer from Amazon and saved like 15% vs. what we would have paid at Lowe's.  (And we used our Amazon rewards points toward the dryer, and then earned more points on the portion that wasn't covered by points.  Which adds up, on a W/D.)  Just this morning, DD was asking why she has two bottles of Dream Curls and I told her it's because I couldn't find it at any of the 4000 Targets nearby, so I ordered a 2-pk off Amazon.

I've read a lot of skepticism about the Dash button, but if it ever becomes a thing, I'm pretty sure I'll have several.
  • We use it constantly. We're on Prime student which is half price but we'll keep it when that cuts off.

We use it constantly. I buy HBC and fresh stuff myself (couponer and near great produce markets) but frequently use it for gifts, books, kitchen stuff, and various supplies. This week alone we used it for: new sneakers for DH, batteries, a toilet brush, porcini mushroom powder, and a bunch of stuff for MIL (case of diabetic shakes, home medical care equipment, warm socks, smaller size pjs). For MIL (really SIL who is caring for MIL) I can get things delivered faster than she can get to the store.

  • I don't have Prime, but I'm obsessed with Fabletics and ShoeDazzle. Workout clothes and shoes delivered right to my door every month.
  • Oh yeah it's great for all natural/health foods/supplements that can be hard to find sometimes (at least in good variety/at good prices).

I love being able to send little surprises while they're still relevant. One day visiting my nephew, he kept stealing my sunglasses and insisting they were his. 2 days later, a pair his size arrived at his doorstep and he was thrilled. 2-day shipping on $8 sunglasses would have cost $20 anywhere else.

  • We have had Prime and it's come in very handy in the last year but as we scan their price points, sometimes it's actually cheaper to NOT use Prime and go for a different item with slower shipping.

However the streaming is fantastic and we use that in addition to Netflix.   When our cable company stopped carrying YES last year we cancelled the service since that was a major reason we watched the expanded channels.   Right now, we no longer DVR and we still get plenty of channels because the cable provider doesn't block them out at the moment either.    If you're not a sports watcher then using Prime easily beats cable prices.
  • I use Amazon Prime for pretty much everything in life.

  • What shows do you guys stream on Prime?  Other than binging on Downton Abbey I don't think I've ever watched shows on there.  I would consider renewing but I haven't found much I want to stream on there.  Maybe it has changed in the last year or so though
  • My mom is throwing my bridal shower this weekend (very excited!).  She's done an amazing job planning but ran out of ideas for the only shower "game" we will play, which I think is a cool idea.  While I'm opening gifts, every 10 or 15 minutes an egg timer goes off.  The guest whose gift I am opening when the timer goes off gets a prize.  She had gathered a few cute things at Homegoods, I Prime'd the rest:

    Green kitchen timer
    Green ceramic-plated metal colander
Nice blank stationery notes with envelopes
    Meyer lemon kitchen candle
    Printed apron
Cool silicone trivet (for $9.99, I have the same one from MoMa for $15)
    Wooden cheese spreader set
Lemon infused olive oil and spice rub
    Spa socks/pedicure set/nail polishes
    Shea butter hand cream
    Thirsty stone coasters

And I got myself the coolest thing ever...a yellow Los Pollos Hermanos apron...I swear I'm just going to be cooking chicken...
  • I need to get that apron for DH!   We have an annual turkey fry every year for friends and now he can choose between that or his black Star Wars apron.

    Spongebob.

    And I'm not ashamed.

I have netflix so I use that over amazon prime! I do love downton abbey though.

I was wondering the same to try and decide whether it would be worth it to get or not.

TBH, I mostly use Netflix for streaming. We got Prime mostly for the shipping. I do use it for books for my Kindle, and I order a season pass for Pretty Little Liars because we don't have cable. It's extra money, but still cheaper than cable so we call it a win. We also just use Amazon for video on demand because they have a lot of newer movies.

I need to watch Orphan Black season 2 before my membership ends.
