Let's talk about closet/drawer organization...

So today DH went skiing for the last time this season.   I decide to take this time to do my semi-annual closet/drawer re-organizing.

You see we have the Container store closet system in our shared closet.  DH has 6 mess drawers in there for his stuff.    He just throws everything in whatever basket he wants.  Eventually forgetting about certain items or wondering where an item went.

Twice a year I clean everything out and re-organize them because it drives me crazy to look at the disorganization.    You know, boxers with other boxers.   Socks altogether.    I know, I know.  How crazy am I to like socks in 1 drawer instead of 6 different one?    You see, I wash, dry and fold. DH is responsible for putting his own clothes away.

So while doing this little project I found out DH has 45... yes 45 boxer shorts.   He can wear a different pair every day for 6 weeks.   WTF?  We have a washing machine.

Then I get to his plain white t-shirts.  Twenty.   Oh wait, that was the count BEFORE I found the TEN he bought while on vacation last week.   Did you really need TEN more plain white t-shrits?

He has by far more clothes then I do.   30 golf shirts, lord knows how many khaki/tan shorts.    UGH.

So how is/was your Sunday?

  • Ha ha. I admit to having a ridiculous amount of plain, cotton underwear in my drawer, but it's not quite up to 45. I've been working on culling/organizing my closet. The big thing is instead of my boots piled on the floor, I have them in boxes (big and little for booties) on wire shelving that I wasn't utilizing very well. I might make finishing the organizing a priority this week.

Today though, I'm recuperating. I went out for a friends birthday last night (Far too much alcohol, and we were at a strip club. It's like I was in college again, except not broke.)

I also need to do some amazon shopping. I'm low on my dry shampoo thats a pain to find in store.

What kind do you use, chibiyui? I like Dove but like to try different brands sometimes.

I went line dancing last night and had a friend sleep over. I know I'm getting too old when I can't correctly do the "Watermelon Crawl" dance. We had bacon this morning though, so that was nice.

I'm at work now and am horribly bored. Boo.

  • @Dolewhipper I use Psst. dry shampoo. It works a lot better then the Herbal Essences I was using before.

It is findable in store, I'm just lazy, and the most convenient/closest store near me is just....weird about certain things, so easier to order it online and have it come to me.

I like Oscar Blandi :) I get mine at Sephora

I don't understand the way H organizes (or doesn't) organize his stuff- it drives me nuts. Thankful we have our own closets!

  • I have a ridiculous amount of underwear too although I've never know a guy to have that many. FI has a ton of polos and always says he needs more. Will say some aren't work worthy or don't fit or whatever but won't throw them out either. Sigh
  • I think it's not only the space they take up but the cost in getting more.   They are boxer shorts.  They are under your pants.  There is no need to have 6 weeks worth or 30 PLAIN WHITE T-SHIRTS.

It's just so wasteful to me.

I bought DH two new packages of white tshirts and told him for each new tshirt, get rid of one old one.  I found out a couple weeks later he kept them all because "he forgot".  I think it was a ploy to go longer between laundry loads.  Yet I do most of the laundry.  hahaha.
  • I'm moving in a week and a half so my  weekend "organization" project is more like "pull everything out, throw it in boxes and make sure it's labeled." It's complete chaos in here right now, BUT I'm super excited to organize everything when I get to my new home.
  • @snarkymaid same here! We're moving in a week. I have packed all the boxes. So DH says I'll do a box. I go look through it and I'm like babe, no. I pull out a stack of magazines that need to just go in the trash. I pull out the paperwork to our brand new stove that needs to stay in the house with the stove. He's like well I dunno I just shoved it all in there. I'm like yea, don't help, go back to the TV please. Lol

We're actually very organized with clothes. Our drawers are well designated and we're both able to put the other's laundry away. I also have a target bookshelf in there that I use for shoes. Its not a walk in, its the 2 doors that slide side to side so that really helps instead of stacking them on the floor.

  • I have no organization. Our closet is too small for any system. Womp womp. Fixing that soon though, I hope. Most of our clothes are in drawers. Or laundry baskets....

I planted a garden with my dad and FI today!!! And we're getting sushi! I am a lump of happiness. It just needs to rain so the garden gets watered in, or either we'll have to water it in.

I'll send my dad over.  Trust me he can find a way to organize any size closet.

  • My H is the messiest neat freak I've ever met. He's super tidy with putting things "away" there's no organization within that. Towels shoved helter skelter into the closet, soup in three different places, etc. And he probably has just as many white t-shirts. Blah.

I'm SO looking forward to starting with a clean slate in the new house! There will be label makers involved.

  • I've given up organizing our shoebox, and just eagerly wait for the day we can start over in a new house.
  • My youngest son moved out over a month ago. His bedroom is across the hall from our bedroom. I'm going to turn his room into my own walk in closet/hiding place. There are two small closets in that room - thinking of using one for winter coats and accessories, the other for iron and ironing board... Otherwise, I need shelves,  garment racks, and shoe rack, maybe a desk or vanity or a comfy chair. It's all about me.

Of course, he's left just enough stuff behind to stall my take over.

I'm in love with The Container Store.    They have some nice organizational systems that would make your walk-in closet amazing.

  • Thanks Lynda, I'm checking out the Container Store and the various options at Lowes. I'm looking for simple solutions that we can do ourselves.

Send him on! I'd love him to work some magic on our shoebox - I've got a closet that's 18" x 60" for two people. I'm so looking forward to our own apartment.

My dad installed our system.  It wasn't hard.  Well it wasn't hard for him at least :p

  • My husband has a friend who's a handyman. Every time we start a project, we end up hiring this guy to finish it. We're pathetic.

Thanks for suggesting TCS. I love the free standing closet.

This is what I did with the second bedroom in our apartment. We needed the extra storage space but it wouldn't have left enough room to put even a twin bed for guests, so we just said fuck it and have a queen sized air mattress that fits comfortably in our living room for overnight guests. The spare room is now lined with bookshelves (partially mine, partially DH's), clothing racks, my makeshift vanity, and all of my crafting supplies since DH has the garages to store his "toys". Best thing we ever did. I like having a place to retreat to when he's pissing me off!

  • Ahhh this drives me crazy too. H has SO MANY SOCKS AND BOXERS. The socks are the cheap shitty kind, too. If he buys more, he doesn't throw out the old ones, just adds to the collection. About half his boxers are ones he doesn't like to wear. So throw them out? And the tee shirts are largely stained and holey.

I do a little dance when I find something with a hole in it and feel justified in throwing it away. We share a sock drawer and it's just puking with his crappy socks and stuff.

  • My H has so many t-shirts, it's insane. His entire armoire is filled to the brim, and he's got at least 25 more hanging up in the closet. Our plan is to turn our extra bedroom into a large walk in closet, with lots of built-in drawers.
