Tax day!

Being in the financial industry, this is practically a holiday!

My day is going to be filled with last minute IRA contributions and scrambling clients, but tonight I plan on having a nice big glass of wine.

Whose with me?

Re: Tax day!

  • My H works in the industry and they fed everyone tacos this morning. Not that that makes up for all the mandatory overtime he's had to work the past two weeks, but it's nice.

  • YUP. I don't do taxes for a living but I file them for about 4 close friends at no charge. One of them, I informed 2 month ago that he owed almost $2,000. He told me yesterday that he only had half the money, so I was scrambling to file his extension.

  • I feel awesome because I filed my taxes before the due date! Yay responsibility. Good luck, you will need it. I could never be an accounatnt but numbers make me sad.

  • @buttercup1958 I am actually a financial advisor so I feel like I have it a little easier than accountants...not by much, but a little bit!

  • @sarawfienow Oh ok! I'm still learning a lot of things, so I don't really know the difference between a financial adviser and an accountant. You should enjoy that wine, I always celebrate with martinis.

  • @sarawifenow Do you have your Series 7 or CFP? I've considered looking into that career field. I do private accounting for manufacturing company, and personal finance just seems to interest me a lot more. Sometimes I feel like a failure here because I'm really good at the accounting principles but I have a hard time wrapping my head around actual manufacturing and distribution.

  • @jenna8984 I have a Series 7. Hardest test of my life! Haha! But totally worth it. I love what I do. Helping people work towards their retirement is amazing.

  • Man, I was hoping this was about the free food thing that someone else posted in the Hump Day thread.

I have no input other than FI was doing his taxes at 8:30 last night, and I'm about to have to drop a full 1/2 of a week's pay in the mail to Alabama. I hate tax day.

  • Yup. I'm a tax CPA. Major day for me too to get returns filed or extended for my firm's clients. After work (whenever that is tonight) I think I just want to kick back and relax. At least there's no work tomorrow (and looking forward to sleeping in this weekend).
  • We filled a while back.

UPO, I don't mind taxes.   Not a fan per se, it's just I don't get all worked up over it.

That was me back in Feb or March when I realized I was going to get hosed on capital gains taxes bc I switched to a more "managed" account where they do more trading than me just sitting in one fund like before. So I realized I hadn't maxed out my Roth yet and I took what was left and put it in a traditional IRA instead for a partial tax break, maxed out my HSA to drop income lower and something else. It didn't completely work but I did reduce some of my tax liability though I still owed the state.

can't decide what I want to do for this next year.  I feel bad that it will affect my FI and I after we are married so there goes his refund too but I guess it takes money to make money......

H and I filed back in Feb.  As soon as we get all the necessary paperwork we file because we want our refund pronto.

And yeah, taxes really don't phase me.  I take my shit to H&R Block, pay the fee and walk out 40 minutes later with everything done.

  • I definitely get my taxes done as soon as we get all of our papers.

You would be surprised at how many people wait until the last possible minute, though!

  • This was the first year I did my taxes all by myself.  I normally have my dad do it for me because he likes being helpful and then I don't have to do my taxes.  FH mocked me and forced me to take care of my own stuff this year.  I filed last week and got my refund back yesterday.  Filed with the state on Monday, so should get another refund in another week or so.  Already moved a grand into my savings account; next big purchase is new cabinets for a blank wall in the kitchen.  I don't mind tax day at all.
  • @maggie0829 my FI started on his taxes back in January - he didn't even have all the forms yet.  It drove me crazy bc when he did mine it was piece meal, I'd much rather have all of the documents and do it in one fell swoop, not do part and then have to remember which items you still need to input (for fear of forgetting something).  I probably drove him crazy because I had a lot of weird stuff last year (house sale, stock sale, other investment stuff, 401K rollovers, etc) and didn't even know what all I needed.

Oh gosh, that would drive me crazy too.  Like, "why can't you just wait until we get all the paperwork?!"  I would be afraid that if I piece meal things then I would overlook something.

I have never done my own taxes.  I probably could be we have just the very basic things and it would probably be easy with one of those software programs.  But there is just something about taking it all to a professional, answer a few easy questions, and then not have to think for 40 minutes that is very appealing LOL!.

  • I actually filed last weekend. But it wasn't last night, yay me!

I had to pay again :( That's the only reason I hate tax day. Because it almost always means I end up paying more money to the governement. Less than $100, but still. It sucks.

We filled a month ago?  I think.  Anyway we just got our refund today.  First time we've gotten a refund.

We got one because I turned into a 1099 employee half way through. Had no idea how much self-employment taxes would come out. Plus i have new deductions from the home office. PLUS we moved to a different state and DH got a raise. Plus I took a second job in the summer at the club.

Basically I had no idea  how everything would come out so I over paid my quarterlies to be safe.

  • I filed back in January? when I got all my paperwork. Mine are easy to do so I like to get it done asap to get my refund. Going to be interesting next year when things change because married.

But maybe I'll drink wine tonight to support everyone else! I'm all about showing support.

And I'm all about alcohol, so I'd be happy to "support" as well.
