I suddenly got the overwhelming urge to add a lace bolero or cap sleeves onto my plain, strapless dress. I've been feeling like it's a little plain, and then today I saw a photo that just really made me say I WANT THAT. But I'm wondering whether the lace would compliment my plain dress or just look out of place. What do you think?

Here's the dress I have:

Here's the kind of lace I have in mind:

  • I'd have to see them together. I think it might look a smidge out of place since there isn't lace elsewhere on your dress. I like the statement necklace from the picture better, I think.

  • I think your dress is beautiful.  Yes it may be plain as in there is no embellishment on it, but I definitely do not think it is plain as in boring.  I actually think the complete opposite.  The fact that it is simple is what makes it beautiful.

As PP said, I would really have to see the two together but I think that the styles would be kind of fighting against each other.

If this is something that you are really considering, I suggest you go to where you bought your dress and try on some boleros with your dress.  You don't want to spend money on anything until you see it all put together.

  • Oh gosh, I love your dress. I agree, maybe go somewhere and try some on, but I personally would leave your dress as it.
  • I think a bolero would look nicer than adding sleeves to the plain dress.  IDK why, maybe because it's not a permanent alteration?  I also LOVE plain dresses and think it's gorgeous as is.
  • I wouldn't. Mainly because there's no lace anywhere else in the dress and I think that might make it look like an obvious add-on.

It's a beautiful dress! If you want a little more detail (which you by no means need - its lovely on its own), I would consider statement jewelry, a hair piece or a veil, or maybe a sparkly belt (you'd have to ask your seamstress about that one).

  • I think that the two fabric textures would look kind of odd together. I had a dress similar to yours, as I really love that style. You could maybe do a lace belt as an accessory though.
  • I would say leave the dress alone. It is beautiful just the way it is. The lace would be out of place like some people here have said. If you happen to be looking for statement necklaces appropriate for weddings and that won't cost an arm and a leg, I would like to assist you with that. Please feel free to message me if you would like to see pictures of some of the pieces I have which can go beautifully with this dress.
