Brush Cleaners

I have decided I waste a LOT of money every time I'm too lazy to CLEAN my makeup brushes so I just toss them and get new ones.. Anyone have suggestions for brush cleaning techniques so I can end my wasteful cycle!?

  • Baby shampoo! I do it once a week and my brushes are almost good as new.

Yup same here, and I use a spray cleaner in between makes it so much easier.

  • I use Brush Off for quick cleaning (like between clients) but use baby shampoo with a little warm water for a more thorough cleaning. For my foundation and lip brushes, I use liquid makeup remover first since that will help break it up better.

  • I've also use baby shampoo. I rinse my brushes in warm water and then put the baby shampoo on the brush. Rub brush in your palm, rinse and repeat. Then lay the brush on a cloth to air dry.

  • I use regular Dial soap. I rinse the brushes in cool water -- as a painter I can warn you that hot water totally ruins some bristles, so never use hot-- and put some soap on a wet sponge. Then a dab the brushes on the sponge and/or sweep them across it a couple time (only sweep in one direction. Going back and forth can ruin bristles). Then I rinse them really well and set them on a dish towel to dry.

I'm not an expert on makeup brushes. It's probably fine to go back and forth with them when they're dry and you're just applying product (depending on the bristles. If it's a flat-tipped eye shadow brush, the shape would probably get ruined).

I just know that a back and forth motion absolutely destroys paintbrushes and is really bad to do when brushes are wet. It frays the bristles and ruins the shape of the brush, KWIM?

    I'm glad I could help :)

lol that's awesome cuz I really suck at being an adult. If I manage to put my shoes on the right feet I consider it a win.

  • MAC makes a really good one that disinfects. I clean my brushes every week, but I spent oodles of money on professional brushes which I've had for 15 years.
