Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

To all my fellow office workers who make sure your bosses' shit is taken care of, there's enough coffee to caffeinate their entire staffs, and there will never be a shortage of office supplies (besides when you need to replenish your supply at home, of course)...

Our VPs are taking me to lunch today. Yay, free food (they know the way to my heart, obviously)!

What is everyone else up to today?

Re: Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

  • Order the most expensive thing on the menu!

We don't celebrate it here. In the 7 years I've been here, it's never been mentioned. But the owners did buy everyone lunch yesterday.
  • Enjoy your lunch!

The only person who ever celebrated it was my friend who got our admin flowers one year because she freaking rocks.

  • My office always does lunch for admin staff but my boss and I usually just go out instead. She's out of town today though so I guess I'm going to go hang out in the boardroom for lunch this year.

I always feel like such a dork when people celebrate stuff like this though. I'm like "No, really, we're good, I don't need the Hallmark holiday recognition for doing my job, honestly..." So awkward.

  • There's been no mention of it at all, of course! Ha.

I just got flowers. They brighten up my desk, so that is great.

  • Happy admin day!

I am taking my admin to lunch today and also have some flowers sitting on her desk. She should be walking in at any moment now. I love that woman.

  • Please don't throw rotten fruit... I'm not a fan of this holiday. IMHO, it's a Hallmark holiday that celebrates only a certain part of the workforce.

I'm not saying administrative staff don't work hard. Of course they do. So does everyone else who does not have an administrative title and doesn't get a special holiday. I appreciate ALL our staff. Admins, coordinators, analysts, senior analysts, managers, directors, etc.

  • I'm at home in bed with bronchitis. I caught it early - I felt it coming on Monday night, and managed to get on an antibiotic yesterday after work (yay for virtual doctor's appointments!) so hopefully it will be manageable after my second dose tonight.

So I'm having a great day at home in bed, watching House Hunters (there's an off-the-grid version now, and it's FASCINATING) and snuggling with the cat I could convince to snuggle.

Currently the cat is not snuggling. She's exploring my bedroom. >:(

Last year, in my tenth year of being an administrative professional, was the first time it was ever recognized. My boss sent me flowers.

I'm not expecting anything this year because the company is scrapping by on bare minimums in order to try and avoid layoffs. So really, I am just happy to still have my job and to not have had a paycut yet.

  • My boss is out of state at a training but when I got back from my Earth Day event there were flowers on my desk from her.

    She's a good egg.

  • My boss just showed up with flowers for me and apologized because he meant to have them on my desk this morning but he forgot. hahahaha

  • We had a nice lunch with the two VPs and another assistant in my office. We both really enjoy our jobs, but there are things that suck about being at the bottom of the totem pole (like being the only one never invited to attend company-wide events because someone has to man the phones). We're a very small staff, so we do end up picking up the slack for people in other departments even though those responsibilities aren't in our job descriptions. For example, I'm covering a maternity leave for a sales person. I don't HAVE to but if no one does it our sales numbers may suffer, therefore bringing down the entire company's numbers which impact our yearly bonuses. I'm not on the commission structure so I'm not getting paid anything extra to do this, per se, but I take a lot of pride in the fact that our division consistently exceeds our prior year numbers. It's nice to know that our bosses see that we willingly take on extra responsibilities so that our entire division can succeed.

Although it would be nice if someone opened the mail while I was on vacation so I didn't come back to a pile of unprocessed invoices....
