Just Engaged and Proposals

When to register?

I got engaged in February but our wedding won't be until summer of 2017. My mother is hounding me to register so people can get us engagement gifts but I feel like it is way too early.

What do you suggest?

Re: When to register?

  • If you're going to register at all, do it before any gift-giving occasions like engagement parties and showers, even if that means crazy early.

  • I guess this is a "know your crowd" thing maybe.

My crowd does not do engagement gifts/parties/cards/whatever. A text with a simple "Congratulations!" is about as far as we go.

If people truly are asking you for gift ideas to celebrate your engagement I guess you could register. But honestly if it were me I would just respond with "Thank you so much for thinking of us. We are just in the very early stages of planning. Your kind thoughts and congratulations are so meaningful to us at this special time."

Basically just being nice and sweet and if some boxed item shows up at your door your write a wonderful thank you note ASAP and that is that.

Personally I think a registry over 2 years ahead of time is just too much. Just keeping up with what is going out of stock would be a nightmare. And I would probably side eye someone who registered before they even had a date for the wedding.

I suppose you could do it before your engagement party, however keep in mind that stock often changes about every 6 months. That's why most places don't recommend registering until the 6 month mark! My advice is don't register for things that match each other.

  • I've never known anyone to buy from a registry for an engagement party gift. I seriously can't see anyone bringing you a toaster for that. That's more like a bottle of wine kind of thing.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
