Two Way Bathroom Mirrors

If you're ever in Chicago, be weary of this place. They have two way mirrors in their bathrooms and it's caused a stir (rightfully so). It's cool if everyone is consenting to two way mirrors, but female patrons had no idea. And the owner acted like a total dicknugget when asked about it.

The Continental Midtown in Philadelphia has two-way mirrors in the bathroom as well. It's seriously disgusting.

Wait, so you can theoretically peep at people who are ON THE TOILET? That is horrifying, and also basically my worst nightmare.

There is (was? Not sure if it's still there) a bathroom in a Thai restaurant in SoHo that is MADE out of 2-way mirrors. So from the outside, it's mirrored, but when you're in there, you can see into the restaurant.

It was really unsettling, and had the effect of making me hustle up. Not a terrible idea for a place with a ton of people in line to pee! But this one was at least private--no one could see YOU, you could just see them.

This guy sounds insane, and like he's in for a lawsuit. Gross, gross, gross.

This makes me feel so much less neurotic for always doing the fingernail test on mirrors - hold your nail against the glass. If the reflection touches, it's a two way mirror. A real mirror will have a gap between where your finger ends and the reflection begins.

You can also shine a light at a two-way mirror (iPhone camera, perhaps?). I believe if it is a two-way, the light will shine through, but with a regular mirror is just bounces back. Depending on the brightness in the room you are in, you can also try to see into the mirror (like through a window at night).

Really fucked up that we even have to know these things and implement them just to pee!!

I've tested it in a police interrogation room (long story) and the focus group room at my old agency (both failed). Aaaaand every retail dressing room I've ever been in (all passed, lol)

I knew that the fingernail test was a thing, but I have never, in my life, thought I needed to test a mirror I was around. I guess I'd better start.

...I kind of want to know your long story with an interrogation room.

Id suggest either using a light to see the other room, cupping your hands around your eyes and seeing if you can see the other room or (best one) tapping on the mirror with your fist, if its a real mirror its backed by a wall if it isn't it will sound like your hitting a window. The fingernail test can be altered by too many factors for me to REALLY trust it..... if I'm in a situation where that type of fear is warented!
