Cant find an engagement ring I like....

My fiancé wants me to design my engagement ring. Super excited, but I can't seem to find anything I like. I want something different, but seriously everything looks the same to me. Any good unique online jewelry stores I can get ideas from? I'm talking really unique.... doesn't have to look super engagement ring like either. THANKS!

Re: Cant find an engagement ring I like....

  • Have you looked on Etsy at all? There's about a million alternative engagement rings on there.

  • What about doing a non-ring? You could design a bracelet or pendant!

I've been playing around with gemvara.com for birthstone jewelry, they might have something you like. Idk if you want (or if they have) diamonds but they have some cool stuff.

  • My ring is from a shop on Etsy called Greengem.
They have lots of really nice and different looking rings. And all of their gems are mined naturally at mines that they own, so they're also very earth friendly.

  • Try looking at antique rings.
  • I spent hours and hours googling rings. Not engagement rings, but rings in generally.   I did search e-rings.  But I also searched pear-shaped and other searches.     I went into the most random sites.

I found a few I liked (none were tagged as e-rings specifically) and printed them out and took it to the custom designer.  Together we designed something I wanted.  Basically a little bit from each setting I printed.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Do you have any specific aspects you like?  Such as stone shape, colour, type of metal, etc.?

  • Unique like this?

    Or like this:

    Or more like this?:

    Or somethig like this?:

If I was going for something super unique, I would probably skip the diamond and do some other type of stone and a different style band (such as the first band I posted). But that's just me. I also agree with PP about searching Etsy and looking at antique rings.

  • I'd reccomend at least looking at "the usual" styles and see what you want to eliminate. Like, some rings have amazing detail on the profile but the height could mean you'd catch the ring on everything. Maybe you don't want a lot of stones on the band itself if you think it would get grungy quickly. Can you get away with softer stones or need the hardness of diamonds and sapphires? Consider your day to day lifestyle; I think that'll help.

    How is this possible? I can't find a ring I don't like.

    Right?

  • Dittoing PPs. Definitely check out antique rings. My ring was in FI's family for a while and although it is a diamond, the band and the setting are very unique. Without any information about the styles you like, I can't really offer any more help.
  • Make a pinterest board with everything you do like. Then, instead of doing it all online, go to a store with a huge number of rings in stock, and try everything on. I had no idea what I liked, but in trying them on, seeing what looked good on my hand, FI and I figured it out.

It's also helpful to think about your lifestyle. For example, I am extremely accident prone. So I avoided princess cut, with it's beautifully sharp corners. And went with a low set center stone, so that I could wear winter gloves over it easily (because it's winter in Boston most of the year now).
  • I would work with a local store too, might help to talk to the experts instead of just floating around cyber space.. My FI took a diamond into a local place where we live and gave them a general idea of what he was thinking but they didn't carry anything that was quite right. The store then started sending him ideas of what they could do with his specifications and he came out with something awesome.

  • I think Brilliant Earth? also has an online ring simulation where you can build a ring from scratch.

  • H and I designed my ring. I tried on a lot and had pictures from rings online. I made notes of what I liked or didn't like. My ring has elements of about 4 or 5 different rings that we looked at.

Try starting with making a list of things you do or don't like. Stones? Metal? Plain band vs with stones? And so on.

Thanks, Pinterest. Dammit. Where have you led me?

My mom has a ring set where the wedding band and engagement ring interlock. It's kind of like the below, except the side diamonds are marquise stones that look like they're leaves off the main diamond. The engagement ring has the main stone and one side's worth of "leaves" and the wedding band bumps up/locks in to make it a symmetrical pattern with the leaves on the other side. The whole thing kinda looks like a flower. I always thought it was super cool.
